7 President Miles Burrus '19 is from Centralia, Illinois, and is studying economics and political science. Miles is also a private pilot, and hopes to one day pursue a career in aviation. Miles has established a new foundation for future executive boards and members at Illinois Alpha. rough the help with the revamped AVC board of advisors, the chapter has created an improved level of communication, and a more clear mis- sion for the house overall. rough this process, Illinois Alpha hopes to build upon recent success and take this house higher than it has ever been. VP Member Development Brode Portell '20 is studying economics and sta- tistics with a minor in business. Outside of being the vice president of member development for SigEp, Blake is a chairman of the Balanced Man Scholarship, a member of the Illinois Investment Banking Academy, and a volunteer basketball coach for the Champaign Park District. is semester, he plans to completely reinvent the member development program. e program will now be tracked online for each person to use so they can see what they have accomplished. e Epsilon and Brother Mentor challenges will be redesigned to capture their full potential, and continue to develop the Sigma and Phi challeng- es. He will continue the Balanced Man Retreat, which started in the fall of 2016, to help strength- en the bond between new members. Chaplain Matthew Breitbarth '20 is studying advertising with a minor in communications. Matthew is a member of Sports Business Association, men's club volleyball, and serves as a practice player for the women's volleyball varsity program. As chaplain, his goals are to plan and execute all necessary rituals, plan Burning Heart for the fall, and to limit the number of incidents that occur in the house. Another goal that he's been pursu- ing this semester is to get the negative image of the chaplain out of the house. e chaplain has been perceived as a position that not many want to run for because they don't want to be getting their friends in trouble. He has worked with Bro- Co to be as transparent as possible with the rest of the house in order to help eliminate this per- ception. VP Recruitment Daniel Marshall '20 is studying agricultural and biological engineering. He previously served on the recruitment committee for two semesters. UNDERGRADUATE LEADERSHIP PROFILES ON THE OUTGOING CHAPTER OFFICERS Daniel has also served as the intramural chair- man, SigEp Open chairman, and on the presi- dents and philanthropy committees. Outside of SigEp, he is very involved in intramural sports, Illinois Consulting Academy, and Phi Eta Sigma Professional Honor Society. To obtain a success- ful recruitment class, Daniel has worked closely with 10 committee members to set up and exe- cute a variety of events. ey prioritized the best candidates based on their overall accordance with the moral virtues of the fraternity by using an Excel file that included information on hun- dreds of potential new members. Ten of the 11 high-quality new members were freshmen. VP Communications Jack Coombs '20 is studying marketing and in- formation systems. Outside of SigEp, Jack works for the Illinois athletic department, making vid- eos and live-streaming sporting events. His main goal for this semester is to improve communica- tion amongst active members. In the past, mem- bers only received news via chapter meetings and word of mouth, causing some false information to spread. To fix this, Jack created a newsletter sent out to undergraduates every week that de- scribes the decisions that the executive board is making and news from the national fraternity. He is also in the process of making a documenta- ry about the chapter, which will feature segments about recruitment, athletics, philanthropy, and service. ese segments have also been featured on the undergraduate social media pages. VP Finance Justin Leonard '20 is from Lincolnshire, Illinois, and is double-majoring in finance and market- ing. Outside of his position with Sigma Phi Ep- silon, Justin is very involved with his business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi, and is on the club vol- leyball team. is semester, his goal is to reinvent the budget in order to allow future semesters to be more successful. Additionally, Justin wants to set up new spreadsheets in order to easily track inflows and outflows throughout the semester. VP RLC Michael Poulos '20 is studying finance and ac- counting. RLC has always had a large presence in Sigma Phi Epsilon. One part of RLC Michael has very much wanted to bring back was House Class. is program was available prior to his membership in Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Michael wants to revitalize it. is class would be avail- able to in-house members to take in the Gottheil study room. It will count for university credit and will teach members about various fields that are applicable to their future. is task is definitely difficult, and may take more than one semester to reestablish. erefore, Michael plans on work- ing closely with future vice presidents of RLC to reach this goal. VP Philanthropy omas Hazlewood '19 is studying advertising. In omas' time outside of coursework, he works two jobs in addition to SigEp. is semester it is the chapter's goal to raise more than $5,000 for the Josh Gottheil Fund for Lymphoma Research. To accomplish this, SigEp hosted the fourth annual Gottheil Cup, a hockey game between four UIUC fraternities, which featured Chicago Blackhawks national anthem singer Jim Corneli- son. Additionally, the chapter wants to log 1,500 service hours. We'll do this by maintaining our normal on-campus service and through going on our Spring Break Service Trip to Horry Coun- ty in South Carolina. ere are some ambitious goals set for this semester, but we're confident we can achieve them! e chapter is also looking to bring back SigEp Presents this fall, so if you have any advice please feel free to reach out to omas! VP Brotherhood Blake Dietz '20 is planning to major in journal- ism. In addition, Blake has stepped into the vice president of brotherhood position, which was created because of an increased need for social events that don't include alcohol. He has laid out events that can be continued in upcoming se- mesters, including two large brotherhood events every semester. Blake also acted as sort of a trial run for the position by figuring out what roles and responsibilities could be filled by the posi- tion. e creation of this position allows the ex- ecutive board members to have less on their plate and increase their focus on the main responsibil- ities of the position. VP Facilities Management Zach Ross '20 grew up in Champaign cheering on the Fighting Illini, and plans to continue that for a long time. Zach is working toward a degree in engineering. His goal as vice president of facil- ities management is to create a culture of respect for Illinois Alpha and the name Sigma Phi Epsi- lon. is is achieved through leading by example, as well as putting steps in place to prevent haz- ardous situations. One step Zach plans to take is implementing house chores. On top of this, he will display good communication skills between our executive board as well as the alumni board. Transparent leadership is the best way to create a productive and stimulating environment for ev- eryone in Sigma Phi Epsilon.
