Page 2 Cal Delta News & Views The TraiTs of a sigep Man Davin Heaton '12 Explains Four Characteristics of a CA Delta Brother DIVERSE Initially drawn to CA Delta for the diverse personalities and interests among brothers, Davin saw SigEp as an organization of individuals. Compared to other fraternities on campus that seemed to conform to the same image, SigEp was different and men were welcomed for their varying interests. RESPONSIBLE Beginning his responsibilities with the chapter as Sigma Coordinator, Davin was responsible for mentoring new members and ensuring they were on the right trajectory toward becoming SigEp men. He then extended his leadership skills into his presidency. As chapter president, Davin had the honor of attending Conclave and accepting the Buchanan Cup for chapter excellence—an award that recognized all the hard work accomplished by the chapter. DECISIVE As chapter president, Davin had a fist-hand look into how demanding "real life" could be: dealing with a budget, making tough decisions, and learning how to manage groups of people who all have a different idea of how things should operate. As the leader of CA Delta, it was up to Davin and fellow officers to decide which events would be most beneficial, manage their time wisely, remain organized, and act responsibly for the good of the chapter. RESILIENT As an undergraduate, students are engulfed in a permissive environment. With this comes new experiences and a chance of self-discovery. Along the way, setbacks are bound to happen and Davin believes a sense of resiliency helps avoid devastation when life doesn't go as planned. ABOUT DAVIN Davin graduated from SDSU in 2012 and after training, served as a platoon commander 1st Battalion, 1st Marines. Davin has since been promoted to captain and is an instructor at the Infantry Officer Course in Quantico, Va. In this role he trains and develops newly assigned infantry officers in rifle platoon tactics, techniques, and procedures. Throughout the years Davin has returned to CA Delta for various alumni events and remains friends with brothers during his time as an active member. "I look back and I'm very grateful for the environment that was Sigma Phi Epsilon at Cal Delta. Being in that organization helped develop me and adopt an attitude that mediocracy was not acceptable. And that was a very good thing for me." E-mail: davinheaton@gmail.com Q&A WITH IFC PRESIDENT JACOB MAHONY '20 Q: Why did you join SigEp? A: I joined SigEp because it was the most impressive chapter at SDSU. Cal Delta's history of creating successful campus leaders, successful alumni, and having the best GPA made it an easy decision for me to join. Q: What has been the most memorable SigEp experience so far? A: The most memorable experience was accepting the 2018 Dean's Trophy on behalf of the chapter at the SDSU Homecoming ceremony. Q: What will you miss most about being an active under- graduate member? A: Since I am only a third-year student, I still have some time left before I graduate. However, I know I am going to miss living in the chapter house with 20 of my best friends. Living-in has been an expe- rience I will cherish forever. Q: What has been the most challenging experience? A: The most challenging experience as a chapter president was being the "bad guy" to my fellow peers. However, everyone understood I had to be the "bad guy" for the greater good of the chapter. Q: The most rewarding? A: The most rewarding experience as a chapter president was receiv- ing the recognition for all of the hard work we put in as a chapter. Ending last year with the Chapter of the Year Award, Highest GPA Award, Most Athletic Chapter Award, the SDSU Academic Achievement Award, the SDSU Outstanding Advisor Award, and the 2018 Dean's Trophy made all of the stress and hard work worth it. Q: How has SigEp made you the person you are today? A: SigEp made me the person I am today by instilling in me the cardinal principles of virtue, diligence, and brotherly love, which I live by every day. SigEp provided me with older mentors who taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to. SigEp opened doors on campus for me to serve on the College of Business executive board and to serve as IFC president, giving me the opportunity to make an impact on the greater community. SigEp taught me how to be success- ful academically thanks to our Academic Success Class. Lastly, SigEp taught me professional skills that have led to internships and potential career opportunities. Nearly all of my development in college has been because of SigEp mentors and the Balanced Man Program. C al Delta held member elections on October 8. Full transition of our new executive team occurred the following week. We are glad to introduce our new officers for the remainder of fall 2018 and spring 2019.
