The scholarships are named after highly respected past chapter members and leaders, 1st Lt. Steven Joyner '66, and Brother Tim MacNeil '66. Last spring, the CA Delta AVC selected award winners, contingent on remaining on active chapter status for the start of the fall semester. We are very proud to announce that one of the winners, Bradley Vansant '19, will receive his award for winning the Lt. Steve Joyner Memorial Scholarship. Both programs receive lead donor support from CA Delta alumnus Dennis Tilton '66. Many CA Delta alumni have also contributed to both funds, allowing for these scholarships to go forward for many years. To receive the Joyner award, a member must show strong leadership qualities, athleticism, and teamwork, either in the local chapter or university student government, campus organizations, college or outside activities, reflecting Steve's participation as a starting defensive end on San Diego State's varsity football team as an undergraduate. After university he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, and ultimately sacrificed his life for his country in the Vietnam War while leading a counter-assault as a First Lieutenant. Recipients must exemplify the traits of brotherhood, high moral character, integrity, courage, and patriotism, as memorialized in Promise Lost: Stephen Joyner, The Marine Corps and the Vietnam War by Dan Moore; have high academic achievement (3.0 GPA or above); be a person who exemplifies the trait of brotherhood; and be an undergraduate member of the chapter for at least three semesters. To receive the MacNeil award, a member must show strong leadership qualities demonstrated either in the Cal Delta chapter or in university student government, campus organizations, or college activities (Tim served as president of the Cal Delta chapter and editor-in-chief of Del Sudoeste, the college yearbook; and was a member of Blue Key and Oceotl in his undergraduate days); have high academic achievement (3.2 GPA or above); be a person who exemplifies the trait of brotherhood; and have been an undergraduate member of the chapter for at least three semesters. If you are interested in helping fund either of these two scholarships, please email Dennis Tilton at: fireauthor@aol.com. CA Delta Awards Joyner Scholarship Bradley Vansant '19 was awarded the Lt. Steve Joyner Memorial Scholarship. CA DELTA RLC BRINGS HOME DEAN'S TROPHY S DSU awards the Dean's Trophy each year to the best overall IFC fraternity. Award criteria includes academics, on-campus leadership, community service, chapter operations, and alumni relations. These are many of the same criteria that SigEp uses for its Buchanan Cup competition. The award is announced at a special Homecoming Awards Brunch on Saturday, October 20, during other Homecoming weekend festivities. We are very proud to share that the CA Delta RLC was awarded the Dean's Trophy as the best IFC fraternity for the 2017-18 school year. This marks the second year in a row and the seventh time overall for CA Delta to be the winner since 2006. No other fraternity name appears more on the current Dean's Trophy. SDSU Assistant Director of Student Life and Leadership Caryl Montero-Adams presented the trophy to past CA Delta President and IFC President Jacob Mahony '20 and Chapter President Alec Netski at the Homecoming Awards Brunch. "The Dean's Trophy is awarded to the IFC chapter that best exemplifies the values and practices of an ideal student organization," commented Adams during the presentation. Success creates energy and momentum, so it is no surprise that the CA Delta leadership is already focused on Dean's Trophy for next year.
