Those qualities have led Jim to a fulfilled life both professionally and personally." I identified with the men of the Washington Chapter and the aspirational character of all the members I met." Jim describes his brothers as men who demonstrated they were on their way in life and were committed to reaching their goals. Jim's time with his brothers has shaped him into the man he is today. "The inspirational friendships are still powerful in my life. In addition, the examples set at that time by so many of my brothers continue to effect the way I live." As a result of the determination to succeed established with Alpha Delta Phi, Jim set off on his career after graduating from UW and Stanford Business School. He spent 13 years with Hewlett Packard learning valuable medical technology that would serve a vital role in his professional future. After joining Haemonetics (NYSE:HAE), a global provider of blood, plasma supplies and services, Jim only rose up from there. At its early stages to establish their international business based in Geneva, Switzerland, the company went public, was acquired and finally he co-led a management buy-out. After Jim had built the international business to a couple hundred million dollars in revenue with R&D, manufacturing, sales and service, he was tapped for the CEO position for the company. Once Jim retired from Haemonetics, he dedicated his time to fostering technology to improve the quality of life of people with diabetes after he lost his daughter, who suffered from diabetes. Jim teamed up with Warburg Pincus, a private equity asset firm, to help them invest in the diabetes field, followed by the founding of two insulin pump companies: Asante Solutions and CeQur while serving on the board of the Joslin Diabetes Center. Jim shares a valuable lesson learned from all his years, "Do not underestimate the number of chapters our life can have as long as we can stay healthy." Jim has spent most his life scaling the mountains in Switzerland, where he resides with his wife. He has two children, a son in Boston and a daughter who also resides in Switzerland. He proudly states, "With my training, they confidently carry on being competent mountaineers on snow, rock and ice." In addition to climbing, Jim enjoys traveling. He and his wife visit East Africa at least two to three times a year over the past 15 years, most recently the remote parts of northern Kenya. Jim also remains active by participating in 10-15 local runs per year. "I'm still keeping on with running in the over '70s category," he said. Jim can be reached via email at jpeterson@jlpgroup.com. Preserving the Past, ConstruCting a LegaCy Design Development Underway P lans for renovation of the existing chapter house and construction of the new addition are in the design development phase. The building committee has expanded and is organized into three groups: design, finance and operations. Tom Chiado '86 is leading the design group working with Chef Jenn to plan the kitchen/dining area, the active chapter to make the design relevant to the current generation, and ΑΔΦ alumni with design and construction experience to build a cost-effective structure. Meanwhile, the finance group is building a financial plan and the oper- ations group is working on all aspects of the transition (including hous- ing for the active chapter during construction) and effective operation of the new chapter house. A particularly important part of the operations group, which is being led by Bob Gilbert '81, is identifying symbols, memorabilia and design ele- ments that will make the building uniquely ΑΔΦ. The plan is to restore and preserve the original chapter house and build a new addition that visu- ally and functionally integrates with the original Tudor design, improving the curb appeal and ease maintenance requirements for the exterior. The building committee is open to ideas, input and comments through- out the process and invites contributions from all.
