Wednesday, January 23, 2013 – Daily News 1B BULL & GELDING SALE Ranch Rodeo Dummy Roping winners Bull sifting and grading By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor After the first day of sifting and grading at the Red Bluff Bull Sale at the Tehama District Fairground on Tuesday, Charlene Avila was ready to relax. Hundreds of bulls will be examined Tuesday and today to discover whether they are fit to sell on Saturday. A committee, which includes a veterinarian, first looks for lameness, soundness and abnormalities during the sifting process. After that, the bulls are herded into a grading pen, where experienced cattle ranchers confirm the process, check how well they look and assign grades, Avila said. A bull must achieve a grade of at least an 87 to be sold. The highest grade is a 92. Avila, of Cottonwood, said she has been coming to the Red Bluff Bull Sale for more than 15 years and brought 10 bulls with her this year. Six went through the process successfully Tuesday and her next four will go through the sifting and grading process today. "It's very stressful because you put so much time, energy and money into these bulls," she said, adding, "When you bring bulls and you bring them next to other bulls, they all want to fight. So sometimes they get hurt here and you just pray to God that it all goes OK and that they eat, they drink and they behave themselves. "Yeah, it's stressful. Sometimes you don't sleep the night before." Red Bluff's bull sale is the "cream of the crop," Avila said, adding that sale is a sort of weeklong fashion show. Avila said there is a long list of criteria of what makes a bull fit to sell and jokingly attributed her success Tuesday to luck. But the bulls Avila brought to the the sale this year, she said, have their grandmothers and great grandmothers at home. "And every year we cross them with different bulls. I artificially inseminate them. So you try to figure out the good crosses with the genetics and sometimes it clicks and sometimes it doesn't," Avila said. Thursday and Friday, she said, is when Avila gets to showcase her bulls to prospective buyers. "Then Saturday is the sale, which is the real nailbiter," she said. ——— Courtesy photo The Championship Dummy Ropers at the 18th annual Jim Owens Memorial Ranch Rodeo, back row, Zane Coleman, Kashlyn Martinez, Paden Cash, Ellie Gallaty, Kamish Wagner, Shelby Dunning, Brandon Minch and Colton Suther; front row, Ty Duarte, Kyle Springer and Jayda Staley.
