2 The Katydid G rowing up in a small town in Central Kentucky, Shelley Edwards Jones, Epsilon Omega '57, approached her first year of college at the University of Kentucky with excited anticipation of the opportunities to make new friends and begin her preparation to become an elementary school teacher. Through participation in sorority recruitment and hopefully being invited to become a member, she saw a way to, indeed, meet and make friends while possibly opening doors for other involvement in campus-wide activities. Little did she realize at the time, that her decision would provide her with lifelong friendships and enriching life experiences through her acceptance of membership in Kappa Delta sorority. LIFE AS A ΚΔ Shelley, throughout her four years at UK, served Epsilon Omega in many ways. Her experience on the Council assuming varied responsibilities, including Chapter president, provided opportunities to develop leadership skills. She says, "Occasions to serve, lead, and work together as a sisterhood team member taught me lessons that have served me well throughout my life." A LOVE OF EDUCATION Shelley's professional career included teaching first grade, instructional supervision, and 20 years as an elementary school principal. Retiring after 30 years in public education, she served eight years on the board of education, four years as chairman, and was the first woman to serve in that leadership role. GIVING BACK Shelley's service to Zeta Chapter began more than 50 years ago, when she and her husband moved to Tuscaloosa as he joined the University of Alabama's law school. Serving on Zeta Chapter's Advisory Board was a way for her to give back for the opportunities provided to her by Kappa Delta. Shelley shared that her favorite part of being active in the alumnae group was getting to know and interacting with current members and other alumnae. "I enjoyed serving in an advisory role and helping guide activities of the Chapter as UK alumnae did for my sisters and me during our undergraduate years." MORE THAN FOUR YEARS "My Kappa Delta experience was not limited to four years; for me, it has been and continues to be a lifetime commitment of loyalty and respect for Kappa Delta and that which our founders challenged us to pursue always—that which is honorable, beautiful, and highest," Shelley said. "They gave us Kappa Delta and may we be always worthy of their gift." If you would like to connect with Shelley, you can reach her at shelleyj04@att.net. A Note from the President T his fall has been an incredible few months full of memories that will last our members a lifetime. I am so thankful for the constant improvements and accomplishments our Chapter has achieved, and I am confident we will continue to grow as individuals and as a sisterhood. We welcomed incredible new members into Zeta Chapter this year, and we could not be more excited. Our members continue to make a difference on campus, in the surrounding communities, and inside our home. We are forever grateful for the constant support of our loyal alumnae. We would not be the Chapter we are today without each of you. We welcome all alumnae to come see our beautiful Chapter House and meet all of our wonderful members anytime they find themselves in Tuscaloosa!
