T his summer, the Corporation Board put Phase Two of major planned improvements on hold while it completed reconstruction of the basement. Last winter, a frozen water pipe broke and caused damage to the chapter room, so it was the main focus of summer projects. Although the configuration was not changed, the walls and trim were replaced, and the electrical service was updated, as well as the ceiling lights and fans. This transformed the room into a much lighter, cheerful space! KEEP IT CLEAN The board observed that the chapter members would benefit from additional laundry equipment, so another washer and dryer were purchased. Additionally, all of the rooms in the east and south halls were refreshed with a new coat of paint. SUITE IDEAS AHEAD Next summer, the Corporation Board plans to resume Phase Two of the major renovation that was begun with the Honoring Our Past, Securing Our Future campaign. The first phase added the third-floor bedrooms, enlarged the house director's suite, constructed a large multipurpose library on the first floor, and re-roofed the entire house. The second phase began last summer with enlarging and remodeling the south bathroom on the second floor, and creation of a new bedroom suite next to the bathroom. In 2019, the board will continue Phase Two plans, which include new bedroom suites on the east and north sides of the second floor. A HUGE THANK-YOU The Corporation Board wants to thank the amazing alumnae who made their final 2018 donations to the Honoring Our Past, Securing Our Future campaign that began with Xi's 100th anniversary in 2013. A plaque to commemorate your donations will be designed next spring, so you still have a couple of months to finish paying on your campaign pledges. We also appreciate the donations to the annual giving campaign that will help with next summer's projects. We hope you will consider pledging or donating to the annual giving campaign to continue funding Xi's capital improvements. We also invite you to visit the house and see the beautiful renovations that your donations have financed. XI'S NEW HOUSE DIRECTOR Another reason to visit Xi is to meet our wonderful new house director, Joanie Calder. She moved to Lawrence in July from another Sigma Kappa chapter in Illinois. She was excited about joining us and has already demonstrated resourcefulness and flexibility by overseeing and facilitating the workmen who were finishing our summer projects. The board is fortunate to have Joanie working with us to create a welcoming, safe, and happy environment for the chapter members. Thank you to the board members who donated their time and talent to help Xi become the accomplished chapter that it is today. I especially want to invite you to join our board, if you have a few hours each month to give back. Although we manage a house, our true goal is to encourage the development of Xi members into women who will enrich their world.
