Mosque in NYC building damaged on 9/11 NEW YORK (AP) — In a building damaged by debris from the Sept. 11 airliners that brought down the World Trade Center and soon to become a 13-story mosque, some see the bridging of a cul- tural divide and an opportunity to serve a bur- geoning, peaceful religious population. Others see a painful reminder of the religious extremism that killed their loved ones. Two Muslim organizations have partnered to open the mosque and cultural center in lower Manhattan, saying the $100 million project will create a venue for mainstream Islam and a coun- terbalance to radicalism. It earned a key endorse- ment this week from influential community lead- ers. But some 9/11 victims’ families said they were angered that it would be built so close to where their relatives died. ‘‘I don’t like it,’’ said Evelyn Pettigano, who lost a sister in the attacks, during a phone inter- view on Thursday. ‘‘I’m not prejudiced. ... It’s too close to the area where our family members were murdered.’’ But the growing number of congregants at the only other nearby mosque, open only one day a week, created a need for an additional space for Muslim prayer in the neighborhood, said Daisy Khan, the executive director of the American Society for Muslim Advancement and a board member of the Cordoba Initiative, the two organi- zations sponsoring the project. The history associated with the building, a for- mer Burlington Coat Factory store that closed after being damaged on 9/11, was a reason to pick it for the project, she said. ‘‘We want to create a platform by which the voices of the mainstream and silent majority of Muslims will be amplified. A center of this scale and magnitude will do that,’’ Khan said. ‘‘We feel it’s an obligation as Muslims and Americans to be part of the rebuilding of downtown Manhattan.’’ The organizations publicly unveiled the pre- liminary plan for the project, known as the Cor- doba House, on Wednesday at a meeting of the finance committee of the local community board, which is composed of influential stakeholders in lower Manhattan. While the agency has no authority over what can be developed at the site, their support is viewed as key to gaining accep- tance from residents. Retirees killed by floods NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Three couples who had been wedded for decades and were enjoying their retire- ments died together in the deadly floods that ravaged Tennessee. The state’s 20th death from weekend storms was reported Thursday. Among the victims were a preacher’s wife who had been cleaning up damage at her church, a school crossing guard swept from the clutch of neighbors trying to pull him from swirling waters, and a father trying to save a daughter who also perished. As those who died are being laid to rest this week, many are headed back to work in Nashville, the city hit hardest by the storm. Most of the city has had power restored, and cleaning crews were hauling away water-stained furniture and debris from the streets. Mayor Karl Dean said Candles offer a whiff of White Castle’s burgers COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Fans of White Castle’s oniony hamburgers have a new way to indulge without any calorie guilt: a scented candle infused with the burg- ers’ aroma. The Columbus, Ohio-based fast-food chain this week introduced candles that smell like its Slider burgers in a pro- motion with Autism Speaks. Proceeds from the sale of the $10 candles will benefit the New York-based charity. The candles resemble a packaged White Castle burger and are being sold at the com- pany’s restaurants and on its website. The wax is encased in a ceramic holder that looks like a Slider’s cardboard sleeve. Growling sea lion pup pulled from under police car SAN DIEGO (AP) — A sea lion pup has been cap- tured after hiding under a San Diego police car for four hours in the middle of a road. Police Sgt. Jack Knish says officers got a call about 4 a.m. Wednesday that the pup was crossing a street in the Ocean Beach area. Knish says an officer parked his car in the middle of the road and went to investigate. That’s when the sea lion came out from under another car and scut- tled under the patrol car. SeaWorld experts retrieved the growling pup at about 8 a.m. Rescuer Kevin Robinson grabbed it by the tail and put it in a net. Robinson says the pup, who’s less than a year old, was dehydrated but uninjured. He says the pup weighs about 25 pounds — less than half what it should weigh. Robinson says it will be released within two months. ——— Information from: The San Diego Union-Tribune, http://www.signon- sandiego.com. Publish: May 7, 2010 Thursday that the Cumber- land River has dipped below flood stage a day earlier than expected, going down to 39.5 feet. But recovery could take weeks, especially in the city’s iconic country music and tourism industry. Dam- ages are estimated at more than $1 billion. And the worst may not be over for the region: rural western Ken- tucky was bracing for what could be the worst flooding there in 200 years. Another 10 people were killed in storms in Kentucky and Mississippi. Authorities are searching for at least four more people missing in Ten- nessee and Kentucky and feared killed in the storms. Families of the victims say the fast-moving waters flooded homes and roads so quickly that in many cases, there was no time to prepare or escape. Others simply underestimated the danger.
