2B – Daily News – Friday, May 7, 2010 Cain pitches Giants past Marlins 6-3 RUSSELL MIAMI (AP) — Different starting pitcher, same dominating perfor- mance for the San Francisco Giants against the Florida Marlins. Matt Cain held the Marlins without a hit until the sixth inning and pitched into the eighth Thursday night to help the Giants complete a three-game sweep with a 6-3 win. Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito each went seven innings for the victory in the first two games of the series. Giants starters combined to allow six runs in 21 innings — an ERA of 2.57. ‘‘I marvel as what our pitchers are able to do on a nightly basis,’’ left fielder Mark DeRosa said. ‘‘It makes it tough on the other team.’’ Cain (2-1) gave up four hits and two runs in seven-plus innings, and four relievers completed the five-hit- ter. Brian Wilson came on to strike out pinch-hitter Wes Helms with one on for his sixth save in seven chances. ‘‘We probably faced the toughest pitching staff as a whole, starters and bullpen,’’ Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. ‘‘The old saying that good pitching beats good hitting — you saw it this series.’’ Nate Schierholtz hit his first homer of the year for San Francisco. DeRosa had two run-scoring hits to hike his average to .205, while Aaron Rowand contributed a triple, a two-run single and a lunging catch in center field. Rowand is 7 for 16 with seven RBIs in four games since coming off the dis- abled list. The Giants, who took a half-game lead over San Diego in the NL West, have won nine of their past 12 games. But they lost shortstop Edgar Renteria when he aggravated a groin strain and left in the third inning. Florida’s Ricky Nolasco (2-2) allowed five hits — four for extra bases — and three runs in six innings. That was no match for Cain, who relied mostly on his fastball early in the game. His breaking ball became more effective in the later innings. The Marlins were 0 for 16 until Coghlan singled with two outs in the sixth, ending Cain’s bid for only the second Giants no-hitter since 1976. ‘‘I was thinking about it, but it’s one of those things,’’ Cain said. ‘‘It’s not an easy thing to do.’’ Florida trailed 6-0 before scoring in the seventh when Hanley Ramirez doubled and Uggla singled him home. The Marlins loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but scored only once. ‘‘To come in here and win three games, that’s not easy against a good ballclub,’’ Bochy said. ‘‘We rose to the occasion.’’ Scoreboard MLB West Division A’s Texas American League WL Pct GB 15 14 .517 — 15 14 .517 — Seattle 11 16 .407 3 Angels 12 18 .400 3.5 East Division WL Pct GB Tampa Bay 20 7 .741 — New York 19 8 .704 1 Toronto 17 13 .567 4.5 Boston 15 14 .517 6 Baltimore 8 21 .276 13 Central Division Minnesota 19 10 .655 — Detroit WL Pct GB 16 13 .552 3 Chicago 12 17 .414 7 Kansas City 11 18 .379 8 Cleveland 10 17 .370 8 ——— Thursday’s results Baltimore 2, Minnesota 0 Boston 11, Los Angeles 6 Texas 13, Kansas City 12 Toronto 2, Chicago 0 Tampa Bay at Seattle, late Today’s games Tampa Bay (Price 3-1) at A’s (G.Gonzalez 3-1), 7:05 p.m.,CSNCA Detroit (Bonderman 1-1) at Cleveland (D.Huff 1-4), 4:05 p.m. New York (P.Hughes 3-0) at Boston (Beckett 1-0), 4:10 p.m. Kansas City (Greinke 0-3) at Texas (C.Wilson 2-1), 5:05 p.m. Baltimore (Millwood 0-3) at Minnesota (Liriano 4-0), 5:10 p.m. Toronto (Marcum 1-1) at Chicago Buehrle 2-4), 5:10 p.m. L.os Angeles (Jer.Weaver 3-1) at Seattle (F.Hernandez 2-2), 7:10 p.m. Wednesday’s late result Tampa Bay 8, Seattle 3 West Division GIANTS National League WL Pct GB 17 10 .630 — Padres 17 11 .607 .5 Colorado 14 14 .500 3.5 Arizona 14 15 .483 4 Dodgers 11 16 .407 6 East Division WL Pct GB Philadelphia 17 11 .607 — New York 15 13 .536 2 Washington 15 13 .536 2 Florida 13 15 .464 4 Atlanta 12 16 .429 5 Central Division WL Pct GB St. Louis 18 11 .621 — Cincinnati 14 14 .500 3.5 Pittsburgh 13 15 .464 4.5 Chicago 13 16 .448 5 Milwaukee 12 15 .444 5 Houston 9 19 .321 8.5 ——— Thursday’s results San Francisco 6, Florida 3 Arizona 6, Houston 3 Philadelphia 7, St. Louis 2 Pittsburgh 11, Chicago 1 Washington 3, Atlanta 2 Milwaukee at Los Angeles, late Today’s games San Francisco (J.Sanchez 2-2) at New York (Pelfrey 4-1),4:10 p.m.,CSNBA Atlanta (D.Lowe 4-2) at Philadelphia (Moyer 3-2), 4:05 p.m. Florida (Volstad 2-2) at Washington (Stammen 1-1), 4:05 p.m. St. Louis (Carpenter 4-0) at Pittsburgh (Duke 2-3), 4:05 p.m. Chicago (Silva 2-0) at Cincinnati (H.Bailey 0-1), 4:10 p.m. San Diego (Latos 1-3) at Houston (Norris 1-3), 5:05 p.m. Milwaukee (Gallardo 3-2) at Arizona (E.Jackson 1-3), 6:40 p.m. Colorado (Rogers 0-1) at Los Angeles (Kuroda 3-1), 7:10 p.m. Wednesday’s late results Colorado 6, San Diego 5, 12 innings Milwaukee 11, L.A. That means Rus- sell has been paid more than $5 million per win, more than $2 million per touch- down pass and more than $100,000 per completion. While Russell’s numbers are superior to Leaf’s, he was paid considerably more money to do it and was picked first overall instead of second. Leaf’s rookie con- tract guaranteed him only $11.25 million. Russell’s tenure in Oakland got off to a rough start and never got much better. He held out his first season, not signing a contract until after the first game of the regular season. That made his rookie season almost a complete loss, as he started only one game. He showed some signs of progress in his second sea- son, especially in winning the final two games against Houston and Tampa Bay. But the problems of work ethic and his weight never disappeared and his third sea- son was an utter disaster. He was fined for being over- weight when he showed up at training camp. He then put together one of the worst sea- sons in recent memory for an NFL quarterback. He com- pleted 48.8 percent of his passes, with three touch- downs, 11 interceptions and a 50.0 passer rating that was the lowest since Leaf, Bobby Hoying and Craig Whelihan all finished below 50 in 1998.
