SEPT. 6 Town of Quartzsite invites every- one to attend the next meeting of Neighborhood Watch at 6:00 PM, on THURSDAY, SEPT. 6th, 2018, at the Quartzsite Com- munity Center. Chief William Ponce said he looks forward to working with the resi- dents to create a safer community. Launched in 1972, Neighbor- hood Watch counts on citizens to organize themselves and work with law enforcement to keep a trained eye and ear on their communities, while demonstrating their pres- ence at all times of day and night. Sponsored by the National Sher- iffs' Association (NSA), the Nation- al Crime Prevention Council says, "Neighborhood watch is one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs in the coun- try, bringing citizens together with law enforcement to deter crime and make communities safer." People even disagree on factual data. What if we could come to the understanding that those same facts could have differ- ent meanings when seen from dif- ferent perspectives? That having a different perspective is not a good thing or bad thing...that it just is? So, here's an example: If we're sitting in a circle facing an object in the center, and we all described what we saw, everyone would see different points of view from each other. Some would even see oppo- site designs, because they would be sitting on opposite sides of the circle. In other words, you don't have to see what I see for you to be right. In fact, everyone in the circle is right based on their own point of view, just as in the comic above. If we are willing to listen to every- one's point of view in that circle, then we would get a more full and accurate description of the object in the center. This is one way to put our minds together. When we can calmly get the clarity from each oth- er, we could actually be grateful to each other and the experience. In disagreements, what if we could suspend, or get outside, our own perspective and try to see things from another's perspective? Maybe we might fi nd our own perspective is not as valid as we thought. Or, at least, it is not the only valid one. But then what? When we compare opposing perspectives, we might even discover similarities. Would that allow us to be more civil to oth- ers whom we disagree? We actually need each other's viewpoints to help in our changing world. Judge Softly by Mary T. Lathrap in 1895 Just walk a mile in his moccasins Before you abuse, criticize and accuse. If just for one hour, you could find a way To see through his eyes, instead of your own muse. I believe you'd be surprised to see That you've been blind and narrow minded, even unkind. There are people on reservations and in the ghettos Who have so little hope, and too much worry on their minds. Brother, there but for the grace of God go you and I. Just for a moment, slip into his mind and traditions And see the world through his spirit and eyes Before you cast a stone or falsely judge his conditions. Remember to walk a mile in his moccasins And remember the lessons of humanity taught to you by your elders. We will be known forever by the tracks we leave In other people's lives, our kindnesses and generosity. Take the time to walk a mile in his moccasins.
