7 E ach fall, the men of the Illinois Alpha Chapter are proud to rec- ognize some of the University of Illinois' best and brightest in- coming freshman through the Balanced Man Scholarship (BMS). e undergraduate members award three monetary scholarships to- taling $1,750 based on high school performance in academics, extra- curriculars, and demonstrated leadership experience. e funding for the scholarships come directly from the undergraduate members. Ap- plicants and scholarship recipients are not required to join the frater- nity, although many choose to do so aer they become familiar with Sigma Phi Epsilon. e Balanced Man Scholarship originated in 1990 at the University of Cincinnati Chapter as a way to attract men of sound mind and sound body, while rewarding them for espousing the ideals of the fraternity. Illinois Alpha began using the Balanced Man Scholarship program in 1999 to identify and reward the top incoming freshman. e scholar- ship reinforces SigEp's commitment to "Building Balanced Men" by helping to recognize exceptional undergraduates. Besides the BMS candidates and their families, the undergraduates invite university and fraternity officials and dignitaries to attend and speak during the program. In the past, some of the BMS banquet key- note speakers have been Ashley Dye, director for Fraternity & Sorority Affairs; Faculty Fellow John Quarton '86, director of the Hoe Tech- nology & Management Program; Keith Bruce '87, CEO of Super Bowl 50; and Dick Rodgers '52, president of the Kelly Rodgers Group. is year, the chapter is holding the Balance Man Scholarship banquet at the iHotel in Illinois Rooms B and C on Saturday, August 24 from 1-4 p.m. e iHotel is located at 1900 S. BALANCED MAN SCHOLARSHIP TRADITION CONTINUES A Round of Applause for Our Undergraduates CHUCK VINCI '83 AND JEFF MILLER '87 SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA Undergraduates Prepare for Significant Legislative Changes I n August of 2017, the Grand Chapter passed a resolution to ban alcohol and other illicit substances from all SigEp chapters by 2020. Furthermore, by August 1, 2018, all chapters will be part of the Nationals transitional steps toward substance-free facilities. By August 1, 2020, all SigEp chapters shall implement a substance-free facility policy. SigEp risk management policies now require third-party vendors for all event-related alcohol consumption. As a high-performing chapter, we also feel that we need to be part of the solution. More than 1,800 college students die every year from alcohol-related injuries. Our existence is increasing- ly under scrutiny. Meanwhile, the ability to insure ourselves is becoming more difficult each year. ere is currently only one remaining insurance provider willing to do business with fraternities. SigEp has seen a 46 per- cent increase in insurance premiums since 2014, and we pay 900 percent more in premiums than the average sorority. e substance-free policy is intended to make chapter environments safer and attract top recruits to SigEp. We want our members to feel safe at a substance-free facility that they can depend on to provide a secure space for study with like-minded, career-driven students.
