Clippers Central Michigan edges Western Kentucky 24-21 DETROIT (AP) Ryan Radcliff threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Cody Wilson with 5:11 remaining to give Central Michigan the lead, and Western Kentucky was stopped on fourth down when a field goal would have tied the game in the final minute, giving the Chippewas a 24-21 win in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl on Wednesday night. Lance Guidry, coaching the Hilltoppers on an interim basis before Bobby Petrino takes over, decided to play for the win on fourth-and-2 from the 19 with 51 seconds left, but Kawaun Jakes threw incomplete. Western Kentucky (7-6) fell just short in its first bowl since joining college footballs top tier in 2009. Avery Cunningham blocked a punt for Central Michigan (7-6) to give the Chippewas a short field before Wilsons TD. Radcliff went 19 of 29 for 253 yards and three touchdowns, but Central Michigan needed to rally late. Zurlon Tipton appeared to have put the Chippewas ahead in the fourth quarter, but his fourthdown run was ruled short of the goal line after a review. With Western Kentucky still up 21-17, the Hilltoppers had to punt from their own end zone. Cunningham blocked it, and although the ball bounced around for a bit, the Chippewas finally secured it and took over with great field position inside the 30. Radcliff found Wilson in the back left corner of the end zone for a 24-21 lead. Western Kentuckys final drive ended when Jakes pass intended for Jack Doyle fell incomplete. Petrino, the Hilltoppers coachin-waiting, was expected to be at Ford Field watching his new team, but a snowstorm forced him to scrap those plans. Western Kentucky started aggressively. Down 7-0, the Hilltoppers ran a flea-flicker on their first play from scrimmage, with Antonio Andrews running to his right, then tossing the ball back to Jakes, who found Rico Brown for a 70-yard gain. Two plays later, Jakes scored on a 6-yard run to tie it. Central Michigan answered with a 73-yard drive that ended with Andrew Florys 29-yard touchdown reception, his second of the quarter. The offenses settled down a bit for the rest of the quarter. Both teams were backed up by a pair of terrific punts. Hendrix Brakefields 74-yarder pinned Central Michigan at its own 5, but Richie Hogan flipped the field position with a punt that sailed past Andrews and bounced back to the Western Kentucky 12. The 82-yard effort was returned only 4 yards. David Harmans 50-yard field goal put the Chippewas up 17-7, but Jakes threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Doyle, with the tight end making a one-handed catch to pull Western Kentucky within three. The TD pass was the 51st for Jakes, breaking a tie with Justin Haddix atop the schools career list. 1B Sports Thursday December 27, 2012 49ers top Pro Bowl picks Nine Niners heading to all-star game NEW YORK (AP) Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson want to cap their sensational comebacks with Super Bowl appearances. For now, they can be proud of Pro Bowl spots. So can Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, one of two rookies chosen Wednesday for the Jan. 27 NFL all-star game. Manning missed all of the 2011 season with neck and back problems that required several operations. He then signed with Denver as a free agent and has led the Broncos on a 10-game winning streak to take the AFC West. I know theres great players out there in the NFL, but theres some great players on this team this year that deserve to go, said Manning, whose 12th Pro Bowl is a record for quarterbacks. He ranks fourth in league passing this year, has thrown 34 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Four other Broncos made the AFC roster: DE Elvis Dumervil, linebacker Von Miller, CB Champ Bailey and tackle Ryan Clady. Baileys 12th appearance is a record for defensive backs. My goal has always been to go out and help MCT photo San Francisco 49ers Joe Staley (74) was among the teams players chosen for the Pro Bowl. the team win and play at a high level, Manning added. Anything that comes along with that, like being honored as a Pro Bowl selection, is very humbling. Minnesotas Peterson tore up his left knee on Christmas Eve last year, underwent major surgery, then was back for the season opener. Hes gone from uncertain to unstoppable, running away with the rushing title with a career-high 1,898 yards and lifting the Vikings toward an NFC wild card. Coming into the season after going through the rehab process, I just told myself that I wanted to lead my team to a championship and make sure that I contribute and do my part, Peterson said. Ive been doing it. Griffin is one of three rookie QBs who had superb debut seasons, along with Andrew Luck of Indianapolis and Rus- sell Wilson of Seattle. Luck and Wilson werent voted to the Pro Bowl by players, coaches and fans, although their teams are in the playoffs; Griffin can get to the postseason if Washington beats Dallas on Sunday. By Jimmy Durkin San Jose Mercury News (MCT) WASHINGTON David Fales still shakes his head in amazement when he thinks about the debut season he's put together at San Jose State. He's quick to point out that his performance is a product of the entire team, so for all of the junior quarterback's record-breaking statistics, the number that matters most is the 10 victories. Fales hopes to make that 11 when the No. 24 Spartans (10-2) face Bowling Green (8-4) on Thursday at noon in the Military Bowl at RFK Stadium. While Fales remains humble, his teammates aren't shy in stressing how he's helped transform the team into a winner. "Probably the biggest difference from the last couple of years until now is how well he's played," senior tight end Ryan Otten said of Fales. "That might be the difference for us taking that next step, jumping up to the top 25." Junior wide receiver Noel Grigsby, San Jose State's all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards, is thrilled Fales landed with the Spartans following two years at Monterey Peninsula College that came after a redshirt season at Nevada. "Some say he's like an angel that fell out of the sky," Grigsby said. "The main thing is since he's been here, he's been determined. He won't take no for an answer. He's going to try to outwork everybody." Fales has caused the sports information department to work overtime with his rewriting of the record books. He's broken or is in line to break seven records this season. The marks he's already surpassed include single-season passing yards (3,798), passing touchdowns (31), total offense (3,669), completions (294) and completions in a game (38). Fales' 72.06 completion percentage, which leads the nation, also stands to be a school record. He would need to go 0 for 41 passing in the bowl game to not eclipse Adam Tafralis' 2006 mark. He has a similar cushion that should allow him to break Jeff Garcia's record See FALES, page 2B SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Stephen Curry scored 23 points, David Lee added 18 and the Golden State Warriors beat the Utah Jazz 9483 on Wednesday night. Curry set the tone by scoring the Warriors first 11 points. He hit two 3-pointers and made three free throws after being fouled on another shot beyond the arc all in less than a minute. Jarrett Jack and Klay Thompson had 15 points each for the Warriors, who dominated on the fast break and hit 9 of 18 3-point attempts. Al Jefferson led Utah with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Paul Millsap added 14 points. The Warriors led by as many as 15 points in the first half, and took a 75-58 lead into the fourth quarter. The Warriors let a 14-point, fourth-quarter lead slip away Saturday in a 118-115 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. This time they kept piling it on. Curry showed how important it was to keep the pressure on, getting hit hard on a fastbreak layup and giving an emphatic fist pump as the ball dropped through the net and bumped Golden States lead to 82-62 with 9:10 left. Game over. The Jazz, meanwhile, looked like a team that struggled to go 2-2 on a recent road trip that saw them outscored by 20 against Indiana and by 16 against Miami. They had to rally from 16 down Sunday to beat Orlando. Curry added eight rebounds, seven assists and a steal. Curry scored the Warriors first 11 points as they took an 11-7 lead then went up 16-9 on Harrison Barnes 3-pointer Golden States third of the quarter. Jefferson kept Utah in the game early with eight points and four rebounds. The game got nasty in the second quarter when Utahs Enes Kanter grabbed an offensive rebound and swung his elbows wide at Carl Landry. Derrick Favors went to defend teammate Kanter but ended up in a shoving match with Jack, a fellow Georgia Tech player. Favors and Jack were assessed double technicals and Kanter his own technical, with Jack making the free throw for a 32-23 lead with 9:19 left in the half. Consecutive baskets by Millsap and a 3pointer by Gordon Hayward helped Utah get within five points but the Warriors hit two more 3s by Jack and Thompson to take a 49-37 halftime lead. Neither team shot particularly well in the first half, the Jazz hitting 15 of 41 shots and the Warriors 15 of 39. But Golden State made 7 of 9 from 3-point range, including 3 of 4 by Curry.
