It reminds me of the line of a song that says, Everybodys talkin at me. I dont hear a word theyre sayin. 1 That song was recorded in the sixties, but its truer than ever today when technology allows us to communicate around the world with the touch of a button. Most of us want to chime in on whatever topic is being discussed, but James 1:19 cautions us to be quick to listen and slow to speak and Proverbs 10:19 says, Too much talk leads to sin. I suppose it shouldnt be surprising, then, that the second part of James 1:19 transitions from a reminder not to talk too much, to a warning about anger. An angry person is usually determined to have their say, no matter what. I witnessed an example of this recently as I was sitting at a red light. A woman in the next lane jumped out of her vehicle, ranting and raving at the driver ahead of her. The worst part was, as she stood at the window of the other car, screaming, her baby was left in her own car, in the middle of traffic, totally unattended. So far, I havent had a problem with road rage but, ask any of my kids, and theyll be able to recall a time when I chose to express myself with angry words. I guess we all have certain things that just push our buttons, creating in us a need to communicate our displeasure in no uncertain terms. My sister thought shed stumbled upon the perfect solution when I picked her up to go somewhere a few nights ago. On the dash of my car, she was delighted to see a button labeled push to vent. How convenient is that?! We could probably all use one in the car and the house, too. Then, whenever something pushed our buttons, we could just push that little button, vent to our hearts content, and feel instantly better! What a disappointment to find that all that button does is lower the back window a bit! Of course, a knob on a dashboard isnt really what I need. What I truly long for is not a thing but someone. Someone who will always listen to me, who understands everything about me, and is wise enough to sift through what I say and hear what I mean. Someone who is powerful enough to change both me and my circumstances. I long for someone who will be utterly honest with me, even if it hurts my feelings and who will be with me every hour of the day and night. Hallelujah, I have a Savior who desires to be all that and even more! Hes familiar with my deepest hopes and hurts and understands me better than I understand myself. Amazingly, the God who created the universe and already knows everything about each one of us, wants to have an intimate relationship with every soul He created. So, when our buttons get pushed, we dont need to push a button, we can simply push our knees to the floor, or our head into our hands, or just look up into the heavens and talk to God. He can handle all our junk and truly wants to hear it! We all have such a deep need to be heard, dont we? Why else would we spend so much time tweeting and blogging and texting and emailing? Its not about technology, though. There are plenty of non-technical ways to make our voices heard. How about bumper stickers, for example? I saw one yesterday that read, My Pekingese is smarter than your honor student. Of course, that sticker was in response to someone elses sticker announcing they have an honor student. Or how about all the times I find myself only half listening to what another person is saying because Im too busy thinking about what I want to say? The truth is, were a bunch of prideful people, living in a world with a bunch of other prideful people, all pursuing significance. And, all the while, our Heavenly Father is waiting to give us what we keep trying to accomplish through all our vain chattering. To help guard our hearts against pride, my husband and I have put a couple of sticky notes on our bathroom mirror. On one is written Luke 1:38 which says, I am the Lords servant and willing to accept whatever He wants. The other note says, Empty me of me, so I can be filled with You. God used these notes to speak to me a while back when someone asked me about my decision not to teach this year. I briefly shared with him my thought process and that I felt the Lord leading me to something different. So, he said, Youre going to be a nothing. Wow! I hadnt thought of it that way. The following day, I felt the Lord gently reminding me of those sticky notes and that becoming nothing, not in relation to a career, but in the deepest part of my soul, is exactly what Ive been praying for every morning. I want to get my prideful self out of the way and allow Him to change me to be more like Him. Thinking more about others than about myself. Listening to others more than trying to have my say. So yes, I aspire to be a nothing. Im not there yet, but Im working on it. Maybe, one day, Ill even put it on a bumper sticker! 1.
