Alpha Slants of BETA THETA PI PAGE 5 T his semester, Beta has been as active as ever. Recruitment week was full of exciting events to meet potential new members. There was bowling, dinner, and even euchre to help facilitate conversation about brotherhood and values. Then, in March, we initiated 32 brothers and continue to recruit for the fall class of 2018. Further, many brothers enjoyed Miami University's Charter Day Ball celebrating the 209th year of the university. The event was one of the largest formal gatherings for the university. The executive officers couldn't attend the Charter Day gathering as they were attending a Keystone, a leadership program in Chicago which trained them on how to do their jobs as Beta officers. At Keystone the team grew together and learned each other's strengths and brought positive conversations about challenging topics in Greek life. Betas continue to lead the Miami University community. Academically, our chapter achieved a 3.21 fall GPA, putting us at a 3.34 cumulative GPA and with a number of brothers on the Dean's List. We focused on a mandated 10 study hours for members below a 3.0 and our academic chairman has been reserving study rooms for brothers. Additionally, we submitted a competitive application for the Andrew Herman Chapter Excellence Award. Last year, we worked with Alpha Sig for Beta Burgers and Alpha Sigma Fries. All the money raised went to JOY, a program created at Miami University that sends students to impoverished areas to help the communities. This spring, we've also planned a kickball tournament with Alpha Omicron Pi and a weeklong campaign with the support of our school to raise sexual assault awareness. All money raised from these will go to Women Helping Women. Mother's Weekend was held the weekend of February 23. Flowers were given to each mother and lunch was served at the Administrative Office with a tour of Beta's history. Brothers made pottery with their mothers at Rapid Fire before a dinner Uptown. The chapter has done remarkably well this semester and continues to show growth. Our work to apply for Chapter of the Year was only the start. Our successes would never be possible without the support of our alumni. Your donations of time and charity allow our chapter to act on our goals and provide us the home of Beta. Any alumnus who wishes to drop by the house is always welcome. Thank you for your continued support through difficult times in Greek life. We would be lost without your guidance.
