Each year, more than 13,000 American Legion Posts across the country hold events to com- memorate the March 15th, 1919 anniversary of the fi rst Legion caucus in Paris, which was organized by members of the American Expe- ditionary Force. The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans or- ganization. The Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most infl uential nonprofi t groups in the United States. Its' focus is on service to veter- ans, servicemembers and communities. Post 82 Commander Evan Thompson, Adju- tant Jim Quinlan, and Historian Martha Bridg- es organized the meeting which featured a slide presentation showing the Legion's prog- ress through the years. In addition, framed certifi cates and commemorative pins were given to those with over 25 years of contin- uous membership. Post 82 has 21 members who hold this distinction. New members in at- tendance were given a certifi cate of initiation. Auxiliary Unit 82 ladies were also invited to at- tend this special meeting, and they surprised the Legionnaires with a huge 99th birthday cake to help celebrate the event. Warren F. Hoyle Post 82 (named after a Shelby native killed in action during WWI) was chartered in 1922 and has grown by leaps and bounds in the past fi ve years. Current membership is 241. Members not only pro- vide varied services to area veterans, but are also visible in the community as well. They can be seen sporting their distinctive garrison hats while participating in parades, patriotic ceremonies, American Legion Baseball World Series, military funerals, and other events. Eligibility in The American Legion requires an honorable discharge from the military (active duty military can join).
