FEBRUARY 7-13, 2018 UCW 31 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Wait, what? Ikea has taken advertising in a whole new direction with its recent print ad for a crib. e ad, which appears in the Swedish magazine Amelia, invites women who think they might be preg- nant to urinate on the paper to reveal a discounted price. "Peeing on this ad may change your life," the ad reads at the top of the page. "If you are expect- ing, you will get a surprise right here in the ad." Adweek reported that the agency behind the gimmick adapted pregnancy test technology to work on a magazine page. [Adweek, 1/9/2018] Recurring themes In more extreme weather news from Australia, e Daily Telegraph reported Jan. 8 that record high tem- peratures near Campbelltown had killed more than 200 bats, found on the ground or still hanging in trees. Cate Ryan, a volunteer with WIRES, an Australian wildlife rescue organi- zation, came across the flying foxes and put the word out for volunteers to bring water to rehydrate the bats that were still alive. "I have never seen anything like it before," Ryan said. "Ninety percent of the (dead) flying foxes were babies or juveniles." [e Daily Telegraph, 1/8/2018] Ironies In Albuquerque, New Mexico, a church's new electronic bells are cre- ating a living hell for neighbor Berna- dette Hall-Cuaron, who has lived next to Our Lady of Guadalupe for years. "e bells ring multiple times a day during the week and play 'Amazing Grace' during the week, and then they run multiple times again during the weekend," she told KOB-TV in Janu- ary. "Because of the volume and fre- quency of the bells, this is not calling people to the church." Hall-Cuaron called the church to complain, but said since her request, "they have added 'Amazing Grace' every day ... a full verse." e pastor responded that he has lowered the volume but will not turn off the bells completely, as some in the neighborhood love them. [KOB-TV, 1/9/2018] Employee relations Pesto's Pizza Shop in Boise, Idaho, takes its pizza prep seriously. So when an employee burns a pizza, the disci- pline is swift and public: e worker must don an orange bag that reads "I burned a pizza," then "walk the plank," or the sidewalk, in front of the shop five times. Pesto's owner, Lloyd Parrott, told KBOI TV: "You know, we gotta have some fun around here. It's all in good fun." Question: I enjoy Fox's "e Gifted," but I cannot believe that they are not mak- ing better use of Amy Acker and Stephen Moyer. Why even bother having them on the show? – Unsigned Matt Roush: I'm with you on how underutilized the Strucker parents mostly were, especially Amy Acker's Caitlin. What drew me to the show initially was the family's story, not the angst among the brooding mutants. Separating Andy from the family fold when the Mutant Underground split in the season finale should set up some interesting new conflicts, but I hope it doesn't just mean watching Caitlin's lip tremble in sorrow while Reed glowers helplessly. Question: Is there a problem between Mark Harmon and Pauley Perrette on "NCIS," since Perrette announced she's leaving this season? Gibbs has avoided Abby since the beginning of the season and never goes to the lab. – JD Matt Roush: Hadn't really noticed, but when it comes to matters like this, I quote one of my favorite TV characters of all time, the scheming Prime Minis- ter from the British – and best – "House of Cards," who was known to say, "You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment." (Which is to say, this would fall under gossip, and even were there something to it, I'm not in a position to know.) Quick, find something cooler than the news that The Flash's junior speedster Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) is set to take a permanent seat on the Wa- verider alongside "Legends'" better- than-ever ensemble. Jeers to Megyn Kelly for going low. On Jan. 22, the NBC morning show host aired an ageist personal attack on Jane Fonda for not wanting to talk about plastic surgery on her show months ago, proving once again that Kelly's only good at holding a grudge and losing our respect. know in the stay www.upandcomingweekly.com We can help you learn what is happening in and around Fayetteville!
