This was part of the annual Veteran's Day Observance held in Kings Mountain on Monday, November 11. The Patriots Memorial, a public/private partnership, was designed by Ken Pflieger, AIA Architect and is located near the entry to Patriots Park at Cansler and Gold Streets. The design will have space for those soldiers who died in combat during WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The Vietnam Wall portion of the monument was the first to be dedicated. Other dedications are planned for the near future. "The City was approached by an informal group of local Vietnam Veterans who wanted to have a memorial for those soldiers from Kings Mountain killed in action. "We realized there was no memorial for our local heroes, who gave their lives in battle to preserve our freedoms, so we found a design where we could incorporate all the wars in a memorial." said Rick Murphrey. The wall currently contains ten names of Kings Mountain heroes who gave their lives during the Vietnam War. VIP Fall Festival More than 50 people attended the event including 30 VIP's from Clevseland County. Wal-Mart organized games for the VIP's. Everyone enjoyed bingo, corn hole, and karaoke. The VIP's brought snacks to share. In addition to the games, the VIP's also enjoyed the fel- lowship and the food. On November 1st, Shelby Lions teamed up with Wal-Mart Distribution Center employees to host a VIP Fall Festival. The Wal-Mart V.A.P. (Volunteering Always Pays) program enables Wal-Mart associ- ates to volunteer their time to local community events and the company makes a charitable donation in their name. After a couple of planning sessions with the Cleveland County Social Worker for the Blind during the past few weeks, six Wal-Mart associates showed up Wednesday morning to organize the hall, set up the food, and run the games. Contributions from Wal-Mart will be made to the D31A White Cane campaign in the name of Shelby Lions Club. A big thank you goes out to Lion Darrell Jeffries, a Wal-Mart employee, and the other volunteers that made this event possible. Provided by Ludy Wilkie You To 1500 Peop 5 a Plan The Menu!
