The goal of the HHH Project is to feed people in the community around Burns High School, Upper Cleveland County and anyone else that needs it. The way that we will be helping those in need of food in Cleveland County is partnering Wells Jenkins and Wells with deer hunt- ers at Burns High and with Upper Cleveland Area Needs UCAN Bliss Center which is a local food pantry. UCAN does background checks to see if a person/family is truly in need. Renewable natural resources (the white-tail deer) can provide food for those which are less fortunate. How to Help... When hunters legally harvest the white tail deer in our com- munity, they then fi eld dress it and take it to Wells Jenkins and Wells Processing in Forest City, who will then turn that deer meat into deer-burger. After the deer has been properly pro- cessed someone from Burns FFA picks up the deer meat and students at Burns take it to UCAN. UCAN then distributes the meat to families in Cleveland County that are in need. By harvesting and distributing this deer meat we are helping to solve two problems 1) The overpopulation of deer in Cleve- land County and 2) The hunger of Cleveland County citizens. In this fi ght against hunger in Cleveland County we will defi - nitely need money. We will ask both companies and individuals to give a donation of at least $70 since that is how much it takes for a deer to be processed. Of course any donation will be highly appreciated and we, at Burns, and UCAN will thank you sincerely. We strongly encourage you to participate in this momentous project by either donating a deer or donating mon- ey, because we believe "Together we can make a difference!" Don't wait to work on it when you're in the blind. Do it whenever and wherever you can. Listen to tapes, live ducks and practice, practice, practice. Do a lot of calling when trying to get their attention to your decoys, but once they have committed, lay off and don't do anything except maybe a little feed chuckling if it looks like they're coming in. If they drift or start to pass, hit the calls again. Be aggressive and call excitedly on windy days. Call easy and kind of lazy on still days. We're not afraid to get up early, stay out late, and do whatever it takes to get our deer; unless it's walk more than about a quar- ter of a mile from our vehicle. It's true. HWY. 74 BYPASS EAST SHELBY, NC YOUTH 4-WHEELERS $649 Most hunters don't hunt too far off the beaten path. I've actually seen some folks ride their four-wheeler up to the very tree they are hunting in. They say the deer never notice. I say they do. I do believe that when deer are pressured they move to some strange places. And oftentimes it's right next to a road or even a highway. I can remember one year while hunting in Alabama that my friend set up right next to a four lane highway. On the last day of the hunt he killed a nice eight-pointer. I'm sure that deer never imagined a hunter set- ting up in such an uncommon area. For me, there's something about being in a place where I can hear no road noise. I don't like having to listen for the rustle of leaves through the sounds of rush hour. The purity of the hunt seems taint- ed when the sounds of the woods are competing with the sounds of a nearby highway. I like being able to hear every squirrel's bark and every birds chirp. I've noticed that my time with the Lord Lifetime Warranty Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ is often charac- terized this way as well. I fi nd that at times I try to hear God without getting far enough away from the sounds of my daily grind. It may be a cell phone, a T.V., or even a time restraint that's not allowing me to hear all that I'm meant to hear. As a result, the experience is not what I need or what God wants. The problem is that I'm just hunting (praying) too close to my truck. I'm doing it because it's the easiest thing to do. But again, the best ones are far off the beaten path. Right now there's something that you need God to speak to you about. You have a need, or a problem, or a direc- tion that you have questions about. And it's a big one. For these-sized answers you're going to have to get away from all the sounds of the world you're in and remove yourself from anything that will keep your attention from Him. It may take a little longer and a little more effort to get there, but we know that both will have been worth it when you return with the God-sized answer you had hoped for. www.outdoortruths.org Devotions from a Hunting, Fishing, and Sports Father to His Son by Gary Miller ler Gary Miller, writer of the Outdoor Truths column has a new book especially for Dads and their sons. This collection of devotions from father to son draws upon the rich experi- ences of men who hunt, fi sh, love the outdoors, and all kinds of sports. It illustrates spiritual lessons for growing into the kind of men who follow Christ with zeal and who love their families with devotion.
