Become a part of the 2018 Cleveland County Senior Games! The Cleveland County Senior Games are for adults age 50 or better and is a holistic approach to keeping the body, mind and spirit fit while enjoying the company of friends, family, spectators and volunteers. In the Senior Games, the activities include pickle ball, corn hole, shuffleboard, swimming, bowling and many other activities to select. The SilverArts highlights the talents related to art, handicrafts, pho- tography and written works, such as poetry and essays. It also includes performing arts, includ- ing singing, dance and acting. The games will be March 5-9, 2018 and the registration packet will contain all the needed information about the games, calendar of activities, the required forms to register, etc. The SilverArts will be April 2-6, 2018 at the Neal Senior Center. Like the Senior Games, a packet will be available that contains the required information about registration, the areas of entry, etc. For additional information on the SilverArts, please call Daniel Dedmon at the COA/Neal Senior Center at 704/482-3488. In 2017, the number of participants in the Senior Games/Silver Arts increased over the 2016 games. Let us work to make the participating numbers even higher for 2018! For more information, we invite you to attend our 2018 Senior Games Kick-Off at the COA/ Neal Senior Center. It is set for Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 2PM. Another Kick-Off for the Kings Mountain area is set for Friday, February 2, 2018 at 10AM at the Patrick Senior Center. To make reser- vations for either Kick-Off, please call 704/482-3488. 2018 Senior Games/ Silver Arts Ever had a time when your day was so busy that you missed lunch? Have you ever wanted something for lunch other than fast food? You may have found yourself having a very full morning and when it came time for your midday meal, your favorite restaurant's lunch period is over! The Neal Senior Center has a solution to all of these issues! The senior center's cafeteria now has extended hours, serving lunch until 2PM, Monday through Thursday. The prices are still the same and you'll still be able to enjoy your favorite food items that have always been offered….you just now have more time to have a good lunch! Questions or comments? Expanded Hours For "The Kitchen Table" The Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center will once again host the AARP Foundation sponsored income tax prepa- ration assistance at the Neal Senior Center, 100 TR Harris Dr., Shelby, NC. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volun- teer counselors provide free income tax preparation assis- tance to seniors and other qual- ified taxpayers with income that meets the VITA scope requirement set forth by the IRS. Come into the COA/Neal Senior Center to pick up your pre-appointment package. The forms within the package must be completed and returned at the time of your appointment. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide trained/IRS certified counsel- ors will be available on select days starting January 29th and continuing through April 18th. Appointment times will be filled in the order of pre- appointment pickup. Walk-Ins will only be accepted upon the failure of a confirmed appoint- ment. Please keep in mind that you may not receive some 1095 (Health Insurance) forms until mid to late February and some 1099B (Brokerage) statements until Early March. Please schedule appointments accord- ingly. Married Filing Separately (MFS). Taxpayer and Spouse requesting MFS must appear together and requires two appointments. Anyone receiving a Form 1095-A MUST file a federal return regardless of income. IRS certified counselors will provide the following FREE services: 1. Federal and NC/SC state income tax preparation assis- tance. 2. Electronic filing for both federal and state returns. 3. Printing of federal and state returns for client copy. Volunteer! It's good for the heart... AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is always looking for volunteer counselors. Training and materials are furnished and take place at the Leona Neal Senior Center starting right after the new year. Become an IRS VITA/TCE certified volunteer counselor and gain the satisfaction of providing a greatly appreciated FREE ser- vice to our elderly community. Preparation for seniors The Food Pantry at the Council on Aging is solely supported by food or monetary donations made by groups and individuals in the community here in Cleveland County. Our goal through the food pantry is to serve adults over 55 and their family with non-perishable and shelf-stable items to help them through the month. The need for this service is constantly increasing espe- cially through the holidays and winter months. We are asking for food or monetary donations to help us to continue to provide this service.
