For the third straight year, the HFCC is sponsor- ing a display of special holiday trees at Carolinas HealthCare System Cleveland (CHSC), each with its own way of helping you help others. "The trees in the lobbies of the main hospital and the Outpatient Surgery Center will be lit in honor or memory of loved ones," says Dick Baker, executive director of the HFCC. "For each $10 gift to the HealthCare Foundation through December, you can illuminate a light on these trees." All money raised though this "Light A Light for Someone You Love" program remains in Cleveland County to assist the organization's many community health initiatives. "This is a unique way to say thank you to a co-worker or honor a special loved one during this holiday season," says Baker. Anyone wishing to participate can get a "Light A Light" gift form at the CHSC main information desk (201 E. Grover St., Shelby) or by visiting the foundation's web site at www.healthcarefoundationcc.org. Those honored will have their names displayed alongside each tree and will receive a holiday acknowledgment of their lights if the donor so desires. Another opportunity for giving back to the community comes in the form of the HFCC's "Holiday Butterfly Tree," which will be on display in the lobby of the Grover Building/Levine Cancer Institute, located at 301 E. Grover St. This festive tree will be decorated in butterfly orna- ments, each containing a card specifying a cancer patient's need. The public can stop by the tree and select a butterfly ornament with a need to fulfill. Needs include grocery gift cards, gas cards and other basic items to assist a local cancer patient. "No one should have to choose between buy- ing food for their family or paying for cancer medica- tions; or skip- ping treatment because they don't have access to transportation – especially during the holidays," says Baker. To kick off this year's HFCC's "Light a Light" and "Holiday Butterfly Tree" programs, the public is invited to attend the 2017 lighting of the trees in a spe- cial ceremony to be held in the main lobby of the hospital on Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. Eddie Holbrook, chairman of the Cleveland County Commissioners will officiate and offi- cially light this year's holiday trees. Holiday music will also be provided, and a reception will follow the lighting ceremony.
