15 I n 1964, when Leland Duane Stoecker '65 walked through Mu's six white pillars during formal recruitment, he was prom- ised by the brothers that if he pledged he would have an experi- ence that would last a lifetime—an experience that would override any other experience in his life. Lee took that to heart. Who would have ever guested that this 18-year-old boy from Bothell, Washington, would someday gift the Old Gal from his estate the largest personal gift in its 100-plus-year-old histo- ry—a gift slightly over $500,000! Mid-year in 2013, Lee con- tacted Mu's Grand Chapter Advi- sor, Bob Strecker '78, and said he wanted to meet with him. Bob was definitely not prepared for the astonishing gift Lee was about to give to Mu Chapter. Lee, who was in the final stages of cancer, told Bob that his experience in the house was so strong and that it had such an impact on his whole life, that he was led to give his phenomenal gift at his passing. Lee had no children. He never married. Outside of a small gift he gave to his hospice care person, Lee left his entire for- tune to his fraternity. There were no other recipients. Lee's only stipula- tion was that the entire gift was to be used for scholarships. Bob visited with Lee many times the rest of the year. Lee loved to reminisce about the Old Gal. He had a trove of Alpha Sig memories and memorabilia. But there was one thing that he didn't have that he dearly wanted before he died. He told Bob he wanted the official ring of the fraternity. On his last birth- day at age 67, Bob presented Lee with the official ring of the fraterni- ty as a gift from the undergraduates. What Lee did not know is that Bob gave him his ring of 35 years that he had worn since his initiation in 1978. Lee never knew. He passed away in his home in Renton on November 12, 2013. Lee was president of Alpha Sigma Phi in 1967. He was also so- cial chairman and was involved in many other ways. He treasured his memories and friendships at the Old Gal his entire life. After graduation, he spent the majority of his life in the insurance industry. Lee's gift gave Mu the largest scholarship fund on Greek Row! He will impact the men of Alpha Sigma Phi in perpetuity. He will never be forgotten. He will be remembered as a gentleman and a scholar with a heart beneath his vest. Leland Duane Stoecker was born in Seattle, Washington, on September 30, 1946, to August and Moselle. He passed away in Renton, Washington, on November 12, 2013.
