Alpha Slants of BETA THETA PI PAGE 3 Alpha Chapter Creates Alumni Leadership Forum W e are excited to announce an important new program that will sustain the long-term success of Alpha Chapter—the Alumni Leadership Forum. The purpose of the forum is to support the mission and vision of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity by inviting Alpha Chapter alumni to Oxford to engage undergraduates in conversation, dinner and fellowship, sharing how their Alpha Chapter experiences were transformational in helping equip them for success as adults. The talks are intended to reinforce Beta's values of integrity, mutual assistance, cultivation of the intellect, trust, and responsible conduct, and demonstrate their benefit in real-world applications. The forum will be held twice a year, once in the fall and again the spring (coinciding with initiation weekends). The topic for this fall's ALF is "Today's Millennials." Our alumni guest speakers are Scott Hess '88, EVP of Mediavest/Spark, and Glenn Trout '89, president and CEO of VelocityEHS. Scott is one of country's leading experts on millennials in the advertising industry and Glenn—who started his cloud- based software company with two other Alpha Betas—hires, trains and promotes millennials in his company. The fall 2017 ALF is scheduled for October 28. We have a block of hotel rooms reserved at a few Oxford hotels, but they will fill up quickly, so if you want to reserve a room for Friday and Saturday night, contact Jeff Newton at newton1609@yahoo.com or (925) 698-5633. Future speakers will include brothers recognized for noteworthy contributions/accomplishments within society: business, government, education, religion, and the arts. All Alpha Chapter alumni are invited to the forums, so make plans to attend an event and reconnect with the chapter, as well as see the exciting progress taking place at the Alpha Chapter house as we reconstruct 200 East High Street. It is our hope that through the forum alumni and active brothers will forge a deep, sustaining bond rooted in our common values of Beta Theta Pi. T he Alpha Chapter is very excited for the upcoming fall semester. Now having a semester under our belt, we are ready to hit the ground running. After graduating three seniors, we sit at 40 members from the refounding father class with plans to recruit 15-20 members during the informal recruitment session this fall. Our recruitment team has been hard at work since last spring, reaching out and forming relationships with potential new members so that we not only meet the numbers we are shooting for, but ensure we are recruiting men that will further the principled leadership vision that we have for our colony as we work toward attaining our charter. Some key events that we are looking forward to this fall include Greek Week, our biannual brotherhood retreat, a weekend in which all of the alumni are encouraged to attend, Thanksgiving dinner recruitment event, semi- formal, and our first Dad's Weekend! RECRUITING MEN OF PRINCIPLE Throughout the summer, we are reaching out to potential new members to foster relationships that were created last spring, we are attending Beta leadership events (Wooden Institute and Convention), reaching out to those who qualify for the Men of Principle scholarship, finalizing the semester calendar, and preparing for crucial conversations that will make sure all brothers are on board with the vision and direction for the future. REBUILDING THE FOUNDATION OF ALPHA CHAPTER The gentlemen of the Alpha Chapter feel very confident in what needs to happen to ensure we have a successful fall semester. We know the work necessary to be leaders in and out of the classroom, as well as in the community, and we know we have to choose accountability over popularity and confrontation over harmony. When laying the foundation and vision of the future of the Alpha Chapter, if difficult conversations aren't being held, then we aren't pushing ourselves individually and organizationally to be the best that we could be. ALUMNI SUPPORT NEEDED FOR FUTURE SUCCESS With the strong Alpha alumni base, we would be doing ourselves a disservice if we didn't ask for support in all that we do. We will be having events specifically surrounding alumni relations such as an alumni tailgate, initiation weekend (dinner included), and our end of semester review, a mandatory individual in person review of the semester. This is a very conversational based review and something that each brother found very beneficial. Alumni are strongly encouraged to attend these reviews and hear firsthand from brothers what their experience in Beta has meant to them. The Alpha Chapter is itching to get back to Oxford for the fall semester and create a lasting and thriving chapter.
