The DELTA PSI SIG Delta Psi Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity at RPI 58pinewoods@gmail.com Fall 2017 S igma Chi fraternity honored Alan Hanbury '74 with the Seven Lights service award at its 81st Grand Chapter alumni celebration lunch on June 23 in Providence, Rhode Island. Brother Hanbury, a professional home remodeler in Newington, Connecticut, was recognized for more than a decade of work on the Sigma Chi fraternity house at his alma mater. The Seven Lights award is presented to alumni members who have demonstrated significant service of ten or more years as an active alumnus as recognized by other alumni. No more than 28 Seven Lights are awarded in any year (only 23 were awarded in 2017) to the more than 230,000 living alumni brothers. Brother Hanbury was recognized for his 15-plus years of service starting in 2002 to the Delta Psi Chapter, leading the repair and refurbishment of the 115-year-old Sigma Chi Pomeroy Chapter House at 58 Pinewoods. As endorsed by Jim Manocchi '75, "Alan's dedicated leadership, and his heavy investment of his time and resources, has been an essential part of making this journey for both the facility and the brotherhood possible. During each and every fall work party, Alan was the go-to guy whenever questions arose. For many of us these issues [repairing the house] were daunting." Bob "Justa" Eckart '73 added, "For Alan, they were simply challenges to address and repair. Frankly, he showed the patience of Job and, along the way, many undergraduate brothers learned important new skills from him." Although the annual alumni work party lasts only a couple days, many times Alan spent the entire next week finishing projects. Additionally, Brother Hanbury was integral to the planning and construction of the new addition completed in 2013. Brothers joined Alan to celebrate his award in Providence, including Larry Mentz '68, Bill Wurst '71, Bob Shortle '74 (with Marion), Greg Chilson '75, Jim Manocchi '75 (with Pam), Bob Bedard '75, Greg Hasko '77, and John Baldwin '77. Additional event pictures are on the Delta Psi website. Brother Hanbury will be recognized by the Delta Psi Chapter at the work party this August at the Pomeroy Chapter House at 58 Pinewoods in Troy, New York, if we can get the hammer and saw out of his hands. Details on the Seven Lights Awards can be found at the Sigma Chi Fraternity website. T he Pinewoods Educational Foundation (PEF) is preparing with more leadership and career development programs for the 2017-18 academic year. The first program will be the highly rated Resume and Interview Skills workshop led by Dennis Powers '63. Last year this program received rave reviews. Participants received instructions and individual feedback on their resumes. Included were mock job interviews and direct feedback and coaching. September 16 at 11 a.m. is the date and time for the workshop. Do note it's the same day of the alumni/recruitment dinner. We expect this program will be well attended, and we are again seeking the assistance of alumni resume reviews and, most importantly, in conducting mock interviews. Please contact Dennis Powers or Jim Manocchi '75 if you would like to join us for this important event! At Parents Weekend, October 27-29, the PEF will again be awarding scholarships to brothers who exemplify our values of leadership, service, brotherhood, and scholastic excellence.
