MAY 17-23, 2017 UCW 7 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM ere was a man named Job who walked before God "blamelessly." Job was chosen by God to demonstrate what a true believer looked like in the midst of great loss and suffering. You see, the debate between God and Satan wasn't about God's superiority over Satan, but rather it was about the true motivation of his followers' devotion to him. So, God allowed Satan to destroy all of Job's wealth, even taking away all his children, in a single day. And Job's response to this devastating tragedy was simply 'divine' — "en Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped." Job's outward response of worshipping the almighty God in the very moment of his deepest grief revealed the genuine attitude of his inner-being — "Naked I came from my mother's womb and naked I shall return. e Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord." (Job 1:21) On that day, Job possessed a solid biblical outlook on life in this world. But over time, his view became obscured due in large part to the "help" of his friends. His buddy, Eliphaz, and a few others came to comfort Job, and it wasn't long before they began offering him their counsel. ey too believed in God, but their counsel proved to be a mixture of God's word and human wisdom. God admonishes Eliphaz, saying, "My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends because you have not spoken of me what is right as my servant Job has." (Job 42:7) We give and receive counsel on a daily basis. e story of Job is a fresh reminder that God holds us accountable for the counsel we give and receive. Carolina College of Biblical Studies offers a biblical counseling program that accurately teaches what God's word says about how we are designed inwardly — the "inner man." Understanding what God's word reveals about our deepest needs, problems and solutions is vital to living a life that is characterized by peace and confidence. I'd like to introduce you to one of my former students, Joyce. Joyce was angry — and with good reason. She came from an abusive home and fought her way out of her miserable existence to a life that held promise. She was well on her way in pursuing a nursing career when she suffered an injury at her job due to someone else's negligence. is event put her in a wheelchair and ended her dream of nursing. Joyce did not know God and was experiencing the full weight of a hopeless existence. She wanted to die, and she spent her days contemplating the details of her suicide. Deeply depressed, she sought professional counseling and commented on her experience: "I can truly say that most of my experiences in dealing with counseling left me with negative feelings … I felt, 'Why are these people wasting their time and mine?' Because they did nothing useful for me." As her anger brewed, her physical pain grew. en something happened — God intervened in Joyce's life. She came to know Jesus as her personal savior. She began to pursue a biblical education at Carolina College of Biblical Studies and completed the biblical counseling program which, according to Joyce, had a remarkable effect on her life. "I thank God for this program because my eyes, heart and mind have been opened not only to what I am unable to control but also to what I can control — my response … I am not a prisoner or victim to the people around me. I have a resource, and that is God." What Joyce is learning by intentionally pursuing a higher education in biblical counseling is not only for her but for the many hurting souls that will cross her path. ere is much hurting in this world and far too few biblical counselors who fully rely on the word of God as the basis of their counsel. My prayer is that as you read this article, you will decide to contact us for more information about how you also may reap the rewards of gaining an accurate understanding of the workings of your inner person and becoming trained to help others do the same.
