8A Daily News – Saturday, September 8, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith REMEMBER HUMILITY The Rev. Justin Hoye, pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Kansas City, Mo.: According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "humility is the foundation of prayer. Only when we humbly acknowledge that 'we do not know how to pray as we ought,' (Romans 8:26) are we ready to receive freely the gift of prayer." How can we pray to include all without offending our faith members? A national day of repentance Prayer opens us to truths we are anxious to side- step. Prayer offered in humility can cause discomfort, raising our consciousness to see realities (injustice, violence, idolatry) we would prefer to ignore. Peti- tions to live in a distinctive way, behave in a certain manner and renounce particular practices can be offensive. They shed light on us. When our prayers do not arise out of malleable hearts open to conver- sion and insight, our cry of offense might actually be a resistance to transformation. Even the Lord's Prayer can be offensive to the hardened heart: the implica- tion that a divine will should supersede my own or that I have committed any transgression that needs to be forgiven. Christians pray to the Father, in his son, Jesus Christ, and are guided by the Holy Spirit. Our prayers are situated within this communion of love, and we seek deeper participation in it. To approach prayer with this in mind means I am more concerned with allowing God to widen my heart and less concerned with the offense that can arise from my prayers' sur- facing of uncomfortable realities. PRAY FOR THOSE WHO OBJECT The Rev. Duke Tufty, pastor of Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City: If your prayers are meant as blessings to a person or group of people that are racially, religiously, politically, socially or philo- sophically different and the members of your faith take offense, stop praying for the people who are different. Then redirect your prayers to the mem- bers of your faith, for they are the ones who need help. The Earth, as far as we know, is one planet among many that has life. Every person comes forth from the one spirit. Every living thing on the Earth inhabits the one life force, which is the DNA sys- tem. Human beings are members of one species on the Earth designated as caretakers of the planet. Every person is one individual doing the best he or she can with the life that's been given. In my estimation it only makes sense to usher forth prayers of gratitude and wellness to the one whether it be the Earth, spirit, life, human beings, individuals or all in one . A wonderful universal prayer of wellness is, "I wish all people well; I wish all people happiness; I wish all people free of all suffering." If somebody takes offense at that, wish them well, wish them happiness, wish them free of all suffering. In the verses leading to 2 Chron- icles 7:14 God calls His people to repentance not when they perceive a moral need for it, but whenever disaster is seen in the land. Then He says, "If my people who are called by my Name," not "If those people I believe have sinned…" He then promises healing when we have turned back to Him. In the chapters preceding Joel 2:28 and the won- derful promise to pour out His Spir- it on all flesh God first calls on His people – and His people alone – to fast and pray and hold solemn assemblies – inspired not by con- sciousness of wrongdoing, but by awareness of assemblies in the land. Jesus calls on His own people to "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heav- en pursues you," in Matthew 4:17. Mark's Gospel (1:1-4) begins with a call to repentance in the ministry of John the Baptist – as though that privilege were itself the Good News of Jesus Christ. And so the disasters in our land provide us with the greatest opportunity of all time – if we will choose to see God's call in it. follows in the footsteps of Scrip- ture, and in those of events – such as the recent Luis Palau Festival in Sacramento – gathering hundreds of thousands of Christians over the past twenty months. I am privileged to serve as one of the national direc- tors that responds to a persistent call in these events to prepare our hearts for the next great move of God in our land. Our purpose is to educate the Body of Christ to the need for and the value of repentance at this time of our life together. We envision an annual event filling the twenty-four hours of the Jewish Yom Kippur with ongoing acts of The National Day of Repentance repentance locally conceived and conducted around the nation. The Day of Repentance begins at Sundown, Sept. 25, and continues to Sun- down, Sept. 26. This is an everyone- can-play opportunity whether as individuals, church congregations, or simply as groups of friends if a couple of things are remembered. The first is that we are not called to beat our breasts about how bad we are. If we are con- scious of fouling pitches into the seats we need to confess and let it go, as always. The second is this call is for people who name the Name of Christ as their Lord to turn themselves – not to wish others would turn – back to a focus on God instead of on self. Of course, any who don't identify themselves as believers and yet feel called are welcome to jump in. But the most important thing is to focus on Whom we are turning toward and what He may want us to do about that. I know a man who was hit by a car because – as the driver said – he was so intent on missing the man that he drove right into him. We tend to steer into what we focus upon, even if that is the very thing we mean to avoid. Let all who participate in this day be intent on what they want to start and enjoy rather than on what they want to stop and regret. For more information go to www.dayofrepentance.org. All participants are invited to post their events on the web site (if they wish) so that others may be James Wilson GodTalk inspired and challenged. All are welcome to take what they find on the site and do it as is or adapt it as needed. No national, state, or region- al format will be imposed. We ask only that the day itself be devoted to repentance activities, that we be per- mitted to help spread the word about what you are doing, and that we under- stand ourselves as con- tributing to a culture of repentance in the Church itself rather than issuing a call to a nation that does not know Christ. We are confident that as the Church begins to live the victorious life that is the fruit of repentance the nation will beat a path to our door – and not before. Let us begin and let us rejoice. Culture is not something you think about so much as something you think through. In our American culture, for example, we don't think about why we use a fork; we simply use the fork and think about the food we place on it. A culture of repentance beginning with a nation- al day of repentance just begins the building of an opportunity to refer our lives more and more back to their source, living though that ref- erence point. Only good can come of it. Jim Wilson is a director for the first National Day of Repentance of the 21st Century. Go to dayofrepentance.org for information on how to participate, and hear Jim Saturdays at 8 a.m. on Radio KBLF at AM 1490.
