It was the Summer of '98, and I had just started attending barber's school. I
was 20 years old, and tired of working dead end jobs. I knew in order for me
to not have to worry about getting laid off from jobs anymore and making
the kind of money I desired, I needed to work for myself. Barber's school was
during the day and I was rapping in FatBack's Studio, at night working on my
first album. So a year later after completing school, I began my barbering
career at Midway Barber Shop, as an apprentice under Mr. David C. Brown.
While building my clientele, in the barbershop, I was recording more albums,
doing shows, and working with other artists.
As my Indie Artist career began to blossom, so was my barbering career. I
received my Registered Barber's License in '01 and became the owner of
Midway Barber Shop in '03. Once I became the owner of the shop, I realized
the importance of advertising and marketing. I began to make my own
commercials, short films, and promo videos. Now, with social media it's easier
to build your brand with platforms, such as Youtube, Facebook, Instagram,
and Twitter.
I created a production company in 2010, called BeatKuttaz Studio.
Beatkuttaz consists of DJ Services, Music and Film production, and
photography. Lately I have been doing a lot of animation for different
businesses and recording artists.
Animation is really good for brand building because we live in a time now
where people's attention span is very short, animation is key to getting right
to the point. People always ask me, do I prefer barbering or producing? I tell
them that I'm an artist and that both professions allow me to be creative and
express myself through art.
