The Red Bluff Ministe- rial Association is inviting the public to join to pray and seek God's blessing on this community, 6:45-8 a.m. Thursday, May 4 at the Community Center. Local pastors will lead prayers for every part of the community. A light breakfast will be served. All are welcome. "Blessed is the na- tion whose God is the Lord." Psalm 33:12 And blessed is our local community when we come together to acknowledge our dependence on Him and seek His blessing. The annual obser- vance of this event coin- cides with the National Day of Prayer which was formally instituted by the U. S. Congress in 1952. For more information, please call Dave Lamber- son, 736-3400 or Scott Camp, 736-1181. ANNUALOBSERVANCE Community to observe the National Day of Prayer Certain phrases throughout the Bible come as reminders or exhorta- tions that we all need from time to time. There's no shame in that. How- ever, as be- lievers, we can some- times feel pressure to already have known or arrived at a certain maturity in our faith. We might even strive so hard for approval of our spiritual maturity that we misrepresent our lack of understanding, defeating the purpose altogether. I'm sure this isn't a new prob- lem within Christianity, but I think there is a new area of impact, specifically in children's ministry. Many servants in the Sunday school class- rooms miss hearing God's word preached because they are themselves teach- ing. Having been a re- cipient of these teach- ings in my youth, I have nothing but love and re- spect for these important members of the body of Christ. I can also relate to the temptation to credit my Sunday school lesson prep time as a sufficient portion of my daily devo- tion and/or sermon for the week. But there is no sub- stitute for reading our bi- ble daily and submitting ourselves to sound theo- logical truths. Accountability is a fun- damental part of our sanc- tification, and our ability to pause and reflect is piv- otal for growing. For cen- turies churchgoers have waited on every word of every sermon, testing what is preached to see if it aligns with scripture. One of the things I spend a little time doing with ju- nior high and high school- ers is reviewing with them last week's sermon. How can you answer questions about that without look- ing at your notes? If, dur- ing the week someone who was absent Sunday called you and asked you what they missed, what per- centage of the message would you be able to re- call? Hearing God's word is a form of worship; how would you grade your- self on your ability to lis- ten well? I think it is wonderful how technology has made it easier for parents with young children. Now you can listen to the pastor on a speaker and sometimes even view them while in another room with your toddler. Unfortunately, I observe more fellowship- ping and little note tak- ing in these training rooms. I'm not mentioning this to fault people for fel- lowshipping with others, it could very well be that someone needed encour- agement that morning. It shouldn't be a pattern though, rather the pat- tern should be "…receiv- ing the word with read- iness, and searching the scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so" (Acts 17:11). I fear some people compare them- selves to Eutychus because they have a pattern of fall- ing asleep during the mes- sage, not after enduring hours but often only min- utes of preaching. Some- times the technology I noted earlier is the very source of distraction the enemy seeks to use, as we access our phones to plan the rest of the day, read e- mails or play games. I take notes on my phone and the temptation is there ev- ery Sunday. The choir seated in front needs to be hearing the good news of the gos- pel preached just as much as the unbeliever sitting in the back, and the servants in the children's church classroom need to hear God's word taught to them just as much as the chil- dren placed before them. I pray you won't forsake the assembling of our- selves, or that your ears become deaf to the sweet sounds of Living Water, or your teeth gritted against the sustaining Bread of Life. Purpose to maintain eye contact with your pas- tor throughout the service and listen carefully while jotting down some notes in shorthand. Talk to your family about it at meal time and meditate on the topics that spoke to you. Search them out and then discuss them with your Christian friends during the week. Lastly, if you are already actively doing this, please prayerfully consider lovingly mentoring others by discipling them. I am forever grateful for those who taught me, thank you.
