CORNING The Lady Car- dinals took a league game Tuesday at home over the Oroville Tigers 6-2. The Cardinals (6-7 over- all, 1-4 league) are sched- uled to host the Gridley Bulldogs (3-9 overall, 0-4 league) at 4 p.m. Wednes- day. MercyandLos Molinos LOS MOLINOS The Mercy Lady Warriors and Los Molinos Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to play in Los Molinos at 4 p.m. Wednes- day. The Los Molinos Bull- dogs baseball team is set to host the Mercy War- riors in a double-header starting at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, as Tuesday's game was rescheduled due to a conflict. So ball FROM PAGE 1 ited to seven games and only averaged 3.8 yards per carry. He sat out the Seahawks' wild-card playoff win and had just six carries for 20 yards in the NFC divisional round against the Carolina Panthers. Retirement came three weeks later. It's a tough argument for Lynch to demand more than Peterson, although it's un- derstandable he'd want to be paid handsomely to give up the retired life to put an- other year of wear and tear on his body. So what if the Raiders of- fer $3.5 million, perhaps with some incentives that give him some extra earn- ing potential? Lynch isn't easily pinned in a corner and could decide the comeback isn't worth it. Before this weekend, the Raiders should know one way or the other. On the air before winning the 28th annual National High School Coaches Associ- ation's Seniors National Wrestling Champion- ships in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on March 26. His time with the Car- dinals included three Northern Section Mas- ters titles and placing seventh at state as a sophomore, sixth as a ju- nior and then third this year as a senior. More programs took notice after he pinned top-seeded Samson Ev- ans of Tennessee in 4 minutes, 33 seconds to win the national senior ti- tle. The full rides, a rare achievement in some col- legiate sports, soon fol- lowed. "It shows you what kind of wrestler he is and how much time and effort he's put into the sport," Corn- ing coach Dan Jones said. Jones knows something about that as a former Corning standout himself who wrestled on a full-ride scholarship for Adams State, another D-II pro- gram in Colorado. Jones was coached by Gavin's father, Glenn Nye. "I was nothing near the wrestler he is," Jones said of Gavin. "I'm just happy I get to be a part of this." Nye, who plans on ma- joring in history and mi- noring in special educa- tion, thanked his par- ents for helping him along the way. "It feels good. They're always so supportive of what I want," Nye said. "My dad always pushed me to do better than he did, and I think I achieved that. I just want to keep getting better and better and better. "That's what I want." His parents were over- joyed Tuesday night. "He started when he was 4 years old and he always said he wanted to wrestle in college," Glenn Nye said. "We just took him all over the country, all over the state, to ev- ery big tournament we could get him to that we could afford, and it all paid off and his dream came true." Nye FROM PAGE 1 CHIP THOMPSON — RED BLUFF DAILY NEWS Gavin Nye, seated and second from the le , signs a national letter of intent to wrestle on a full-ride scholarship for Colorado State University-Pueblo on Tuesday night at Corning High. 49 minutes, blocking nine shots and making 18 of his 23 shots, mostly volcanic alley-oops that jolted his team's adrenaline. In McGee's 49 minutes on the court, the Warriors outscored the Blazers by 48. In his 143 minutes off of it, they outscored the Blazers by 23. So a McGee injection — against the Blazers — turned the War- riors from solid to outra- geously dominant: a 132.5 offensive rating, 90.3 de- fensive rating and 42.2 net rating in his Round 1 court time. Which begs the obvious question: Why didn't Mc- Gee play more? He only av- eraged 12.3 minutes in the four games. Steve Kerr's — and now Mike Brown's — explanation has been sim- ple. JaVale is like a Nos but- ton in the Fast and Furious movies. You inject him to send your car into warp speed, but — like a star in Mario Kart — it can only last a limited amount of time.
