Ph ys ic ia n se nt t o Los Molinos to fight mosquitos Tehama County will take part in the national Drug Take-Back Day 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29 with two lo- cations — the Tehama County Sheriff's Office at 22840 Antelope Blvd., Red Bluff and the Corn- ing Police Department, 774 Third St. Dispose of expired, un- wanted or unused pre- scription drugs and other medications and help pre- vent abuse and theft. The program is anony- mous and free to partici- pants. Prescription and over the counter solid dos- age medications, i.e. tab- lets and capsules, are ac- cepted. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original containers. Intra-venous solutions, injectables and needles and illicit substances such as marijuana or metham- phetamine are not part of this initiative and will not be accepted. The Drug Enforcement Agency is coordinating with state and local law enforcement agencies na- tionwide to remove po- tentially dangerous con- trolled substances from our medicine cabinets. Corning Police Depart- ment, Tehama County Sheriff's Office, Tehama County Health Services Agency, Tehama County Department of Education and Tehama County Solid Waste Management are joining in this effort. The National Take-Back Initiative Day provides an opportunity for the public to dispose of expired, un- wanted, or unused medi- cations. These drugs are a potential source of supply for illegal use and pose an unacceptable risk to pub- lic health and safety. For more information, call the Sheriff's Office at 529-7940 or Laura Calkins at the Corning Police De- partment at 824-7015. This recipe for the Baja BLT burger — without the cilantro remoulade — is from The Nolan Ryan Beef & Barbecue Cookbook. 4 pounds ground chuck (80-20 meat to fat ratio) 16 slices Applewood- smoked bacon 2 tablespoons olive oil 8 ounces white mush- rooms, sliced 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon honey 1/3 teaspoon salt 1/3 teaspoon garlic pow- der 1/3 teaspoon paprika 8 slices Swiss cheese 16 slices whole-grain bread or 8 whole-wheat hamburger buns, toasted 1 cup mayonnaise Out leaves from 1 head red or green leaf lettuce 2 tomatoes, sliced thin 2 red onions, sliced thin 2 large avocados, peeled, pitted and sliced thin Preheat the grill or a grill pan to medium-high and the oven to 400 de- grees. If using a grill, lightly oil the grill grates. Cook the bacon on a baking sheet in the oven until crisp, about 15 min- utes. Drain off the fat, pat the bacon dry with paper towels, and tent with foil to keep warm. Leave the oven on. Meanwhile, in a me- dium saute pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Saute the mush- rooms until tender. Trans- fer the mushrooms to a bowl and add the balsamic and honey; stir to combine and then set aside at room temperature. Form the ground chuck into 8 patties. Season the burgers with the salt, gar- lic powder, paprika. Re- frigerate the patties for 30 minutes to allow the seasoning to flavor the meat. Grill the burgers (in batches, if necessary) for 6 minutes per side for me- dium-well. Place the burgers on a baking sheet and top with the bacon, mushrooms, and cheese; bake for a few minutes until the cheese melts. Spread some mayon- naise on all of the toast slices. Place some let- tuce, tomato, onion and avocado on half the toast slices. Top each with a burger, cover with the re- maining toast slices, and serve. Nolan's Grilling Tip: After forming the burger patties, it's a good idea to put them in the refrigera- tor for a half hour or so to let them firm up. This will also help enhance the fla- vor by letting all the ingre- dients soak into the patty before grilling. Makes: 8 burgers. Prep time: 30 minutes, plus 30 minutes to chill the meat. Cooking time: 12 minutes.
