Marleausaid. Thornton and Marleau both made it clear they want to re-sign with the Sharks. The question is whether the Sharks want to bring back both players and if they can make the numbers work under the salary cap. It's part of what's sure to be the Sharks' biggest off- season in years. In addition to electing what to do with Thornton and Marleau, Wilson will need make decisions on which players to protect for the upcoming expansion draft and how many of the Sharks' four restricted free agents he'll extend qualify- ing offers towards. New contracts for de- fenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic and goalie Mar- tin Jones are also on the docket. Both players are scheduled to become unre- stricted free agents in the summer of 2018. Wilson is hoping to ex- tend the contracts of Vlasic and Jones before training camp kicks off next fall, which could be costly, im- pacting the amount of sal- ary the team has available to re-sign the veteran for- wards. "Everybody is con- nected. It's a cap system," Wilson said. "Martin Jones is everything we expected him to be and he's crucial. Marc-Edouard Vlasic is ar- guably one of the best de- fensemen in the league and you saw what he did against one of the top play- ers in the league (Connor McDavid)." "Both of them are ex- tremely important to get under contract." When asked if he ex- pects to remain with the Sharks in the future, Vlasic said "hopefully." Jones also expressed a desire to reach a long-term deal with the club. "Absolutely. Yeah, I love it here," Jones said. "Like I said, the guys are great. It's a lot of fun coming to the rink every day. City has been great. The fans are awesome, and we have a great team. I'm excited." Both Thornton, who has spent 12 seasons with the Sharks, and Marleau, who has played all of his 1,493 NHL games in San Jose, said Monday they want to return to the club. "I think this is a Stanley Cup-caliber team." Thorn- ton said. "Of course, I'd like to come back. But we'll have to see. I'm sure we'll be talking." When asked if he'd like to rejoin the team, Mar- leau said: "Yeah, it would be nice. We'll see if that's an option. There's a lot a time here before the deci- sion has to be made." The 37-year-old forward, who potted 27 goals and re- corded 46 points this year, thinks he still has, "an- other five good years," left to play, "maybe more." Thornton and Mar- leau have not started con- tract negotiations with the Sharks. With the expan- sion draft on June 21, it's unlikely either player will sign before July 1 because they would then need to be protected. "Guys like that aren't growing on trees," defen- seman Brent Burns said of Thornton and Marleau. "You hear about the age stuff, but those guys are both still in great shape." Sharks FROMPAGE1 Lynch, despite his star status as a player and later Fox Sports broad- caster, is keeping his ego in check. He repeatedly insisted how the draft, like all matters, is a col- laborative effort with new coach Kyle Shanahan. And Lynch praised the "invaluable" contribu- tions of personnel lieu- tenants Adam Peters and Martin Mayhew. Lynch said his draft strategy should resemble the aggressiveness of not only his former playing style as a Pro Bowl safety but also Shanahan's play- calling attitude. "You can't play scared, in life and in this league in particular," Lynch said. "You've got to play smart but you can't play scared. I hope that's a quality you'll see from us, that we're never going to do things because they're safe. "We'll try to do things because they are smart and well thought out. If you're doing things be- cause you're scared, you're already behind the 8-ball. When I think of Kyle Sha- nahan, at least me, I think of someone smart, intelli- gent but aggressive. That's how we want to act in this draft as well." Notes • The 49ers have not yet decided whether to pick up defensive back Jimmie Ward's 2018 option. Lynch said that is not an indict- ment on Ward. The dead- line is May 3 for teams to move on the fifth-year op- tions of 2014 first-round draft picks. • Only three weeks ago, the 49ers changed their pre-draft grading system to those similarly used in New England, Denver and Atlanta, Lynch said. • The 49ers begin a three-day minicamp Tues- day. "You're allowed this with a new regime and we'll take advantage of it, to get a look real quick," Lynch said. "Whether or not it changes our mind on anything, you'd hate not to give guys an opportunity to show what they're do- ing." • As Lynch and his staff analyze mock drafts from assorted media, he'll put more stock into those from "reputable" analysts. One high on his list is NFL Net- work's Mike Mayock. "I'll tell you one thing, not to give guys plug, Mike Mayock, that sucker, ev- ery pro day I was at he was at. He's out there do- ing the work. Someone showing up and doing the work, you tend to listen to those guys a little more." 49ers FROM PAGE 1 gled, doubled and scored their only run. So as the A's prepare to open a three-game series in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night, Healy is back. The fact that the in- fielder began the season with a .170/.204/.340 slash line wasn't lost on the rest ofbaseball.WhentheHous- tonAstros wereintown last week, nine-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slug- ger winner Carlos Beltran took Healy aside for a cou- ple of quick words. Beltran was running while Healy was manning first base, and while the A's were hav- ingameetingonthemound in the fourth inning Beltran offered an observation. "Beltran told me that last weekend that you have to love every step of the process," Healy said. "That's whether that's sit- ting in here eating break- fast or doing Sudoku or if I'm in the cage getting my work in or if I'm in the game. I have to check all the boxes that I'm focused to be successful." He's checking those boxes now. Healy has gone 11 for 21 with four runs, six RBIs, four doubles and a homer to get his slash line to a more competitive .279/.319/.500. That's an im- provement of .109/.115/.160, not half bad. To get his swing going, Healy took the counter- intuitive approach by not swinging. He backed off and rediscovered his natu- ral swing that had helped him become a third-round draft pick from Oregon in 2013. "I swung a lot less," he summed up. "Before that, I'd just spent two weeks in the cage. I felt like I was searching for a mechanical issue. But it was just men- tal, my approach. It was a matter of being able to slow my body down, slow my mind down, slow my eyes down. "Thatgivesmetheability to swing at better pitches. I need to give myself better opportunities. I'm still not there. My timing is a little off here and there. It shows that there's always room for improvement, and that's what I continue to try to do. "I needed more mental positivity." Thanks to Dr. Melvin's medicine, it seems as if he's found it. A's FROM PAGE 1 MLB New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox or Tampa Bay Rays vs. Baltimore Orioles:4p.m., MLB. On the air By Carl Steward BayAreaNewsGroup SAN FRANCISCO Giants ace Madison Bumgarner, speaking publicly for the first time since the Colo- rado dirt bike accident that injured his pitching shoul- der, said Monday he deeply regrets the decision to risk his body in an off-day out- door endeavor but vowed to get back to the mound as quickly as he possibly can. "It's terrible," Bumgar- ner said. "Obviously, it was not my intentions when we set out to enjoy the off day. I realize that's definitely not the most responsi- ble decision I've made. It sucks not being able to be out here with my guys." Bumgarner said he didn't make a formal apol- ogy to the team but has spoken to teammates in- dividually. "I feel like it's pretty clear," he said. "I obviously don't want to be in this sit- uation, don't want to put these guys in this situation, this organization, the fans, the city." Bumgarner, who met the media with his left arm in a sling, said he was still having tests on his shoulder and ribs — he was scheduled for a sec- ond MRI Monday evening — but does not yet know if he suffered any struc- tural damage in his pitch- ing arm. He said he has been feel- ing better every day since the mishap, however. Bumgarner said he spent the off day last Thursday riding trail bikes in the mountains outside Denver with two family members. He said they were near the end of two-to-three hours of riding when the acci- dent occurred. The pitcher maintained he was mak- ing every effort to be safe and couldn't describe what caused the accident.
