Senior Moments Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is sur- prisingly the most widely used di- etary condiment in the world today. It's actually part of the plant family that includes turmeric and carda- mom, which may explain why the health benefits of ginger are so ex- traordinary. The Chinese and Indians have used ginger tonics to treat ailments for over 4,700 years, and it was a price- less commodity during the Roman Empire trade around the coming of Christ because of its medicinal properties. So, what makes ginger so good for us? In one word: Gingerol. Of the 115 different chemical com- ponents found in ginger root, the therapeutic benefits come from gingerols, the oily resin from the root that acts as a highly potentan- tioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. These bioactive ingredients, especially gingerol, have been thor- oughly evaluated clinically, and the research backs up why you should use ginger on a regular basis. The health benefits from ginger are numerous and include nausea relief, digestive support, can help heal ulcers, boosts immunity, im- proves diabetes, anti-fungal, reduc- es pain, fights cancer, helps with weight loss, effective on both ten- sion & sinus headaches as well. It is also a powerful anti-inflammatory & can help relieve pain & stiffness of arthritis, etc. Studies have also shown that gin- ger extract may be an even more ef- fective anti-cancer agent than che- motherapy drugs, killing cancerous cells while leaving healthy ones untouched. Its anti-inflammatory properties might also help prevent the progression of precancerous cells to cancer. This incredible su- per food herb is 13th on the anti- oxidant list boasting an impres- sive ORAC score of 28,811. Ginger Amazing benefits of Ginger is composed of several volatile oils that give it it's characteristic flavor and odor; zingerone, shogaols, & gingerols. These oils are powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fun- gal, anti-parasitic agents. In addi- tion, it inhibits cancer cell forma- tion while firing up our body's own inborn ability to destroy the cancer cells which are already present. Ginger is also very high in potas- sium which aids in electrical energy production and detoxification. It is a great source of manganese which protects the lining of the heart blood vessels and urinary tract. Ginger contains silicon which en- hances skin, hair, teeth & nails. It helps assimilate calcium and reduc- es inflammation in the bone tissue aiding the development of strong bones and teeth. Ginger is classified as a carmina- tive (reducing intestinal gas) and an intestinal spasmolytic (soothes intestinal tract). Ginger is known to reduce fever related nausea, motion sickness, and feelings of "morning sickness." Additionally, it helps aid in the production of bile, making it particularly helpful in digesting fats. You can use it in any of it's nu- merous forms...raw, essential oil or powder...they all work great!! Monday - Friday, 9am – 3pm By Jane Finley A DAY LIKE TODAY (Dedicated to My Friend and Fellow Writer, Jack Wiley) It's seldom a day like today in Q, a GREAT day for a nap on the sofa; The sky is gray, and the strong wind is making a dust mop of the palm tree by my window. It's doing a great job of sweeping the sky. No wildlife to be seen: no bunnies; no birds. I imagine them cuddled together in nests or burrows safe from the storm. I say to the whistling wind: "Never stop; the tunes you play are music to my ears." Quartzsite, AZ 3/1/17 Poems from the road Read Desert MESSENGER E-edition online @ www.MyQuartzsite.com
