By Joanne Winer Once you get out of church Sunday, March 5th you should come to the QIA (Quartzsite Improvement As- soc.) where a special anniversary quilt is being presented to the board and members, in honor of last year's 50th Anniversary of the QIA. This special quilt is made up of t- shirts depicting some of the popular events and organizations that have been part of the town for the past 50 years. It was originally going to be made last year for the actual an- niversary, but due to ill health and other circumstances it was left until this year. The idea for the quilt came from Paul Winer, who along with his wife Joanne, are donating the quilt to the QIA as a gift for them to hang in their Main Hall. It is a way for the community to say thank you to the QIA and its volunteers for be- ing there for us; and for all the work they do to make our winter season so successful by having so many events and activities for everyone to enjoy. They all deserve a huge thank you for providing us with a great place to meet other people and have some good times at all the dinners, dances, concerts, craft shows, bin- gos, and much more. The QIA also does a lot for many other local non-profi ts and organi- zations who use the facility to have functions there. They have hosted many events and their volunteers have always been wonderful to work with. Although the quilt is from Joanne and Paul, they feel that be- cause of all the different t-shirts that went into it, and all the work that went into quilting it by the ladies at the Alliance Church Quilt Group, that it really does come from the community as well. The quilt will hang on the wall in the main hall near the stage so everyone can see it really well. Thanks to the ladies at the quilt club, it is going to become a memory to everyone of things that only happened in Quartzsite and will have a place on honor at this fa- cility for all to see. The presentation will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 5 and will be followed by one of the funniest movies you will ever see-- it is a story of two people who buy their fi rst trailer back in the 50's and take a cross country trip--starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez, "The Long, Long Trailer" is a classic movie that will keep you laughing all through it. Did you know that we were all called "trailerites" back in those days?? Come to this FREE movie and enjoy an afternoon of lots of laughs. The snack bar will have popcorn, sodas, water, ice cream. For this special occasion, the QIA is also serving hot dogs and chili dogs with nachos for those who want some lunch or a snack. Please come out and share the presentation to this excellent organization and have a fun time watching how things used to be on the road with a trailer--or maybe still are!!! Don't forget--Sun- day March 5 at 1 p.m. at the QIA-- one of their last events this season. The Quartzsite Library will host the fol- lowing programs: The 1st program will be March 9th, 2017 at 7 PM, refreshments will be furnished by Quartzsite Historical Soci- ety: "LT Wm. H. (Bold) Emory. The Most Famous Explorer you never heard of." Come listen and see a presentation by Bill Heidner, Museum Curator of the US Army Yuma Proving Ground about the most fa- mous Explorer you never heard of. Perhaps singularly responsible for America's initial glimpses of, and endearing love affair with the Desert Southwest, we owe a lot to "Bold" Emory. Find out what set him apart from other explorers, trappers, Army Engineers. The 2nd program will be March 23rd, 2017 at 7 PM, refreshments will be fur- nished by Quartzsite Library Friends. "General George S. Patton Jr. - Dynamic Leadership and Desert Training help to bring Allied victory in WWII." Patton's life led him to a rendezvous with destiny. Bill Heidner, the Museum Curator of the Heri- tage Center of the US Army Yuma Proving Ground explores the General's life along the way to Allied victory in WWII. This of course included a key stop over in our desert to cre- ate the Desert Training Center / California Arizona Maneuver Area (DTC / CAMA).
