As one storm pushes eastward across New York state with snow showers, a storm will push off the mid-Atlantic coast with rain and thun- derstorms trailing to the northeastern Gulf Coast. Snow and wind are forecast to ramp up over Maine and New Hampshire at night, while lake- effect snow develops over the interior Northeast. Most areas from the Mississippi River to the Rock- ies, Great Basin and Southwest states can expect a dry day with sunshine where temperatures are projected to climb to mild levels. PresssecretarySeanSpicer saidFlynn'sfiringonMonday was prompted by a gradual "erosionofthattrust"andnot any concern about the legal- ity of the retired general's calls with the Russian am- bassador to the U.S. Spicer said the president withheld judgment on Flynn until af- tertheWhiteHousecounsel's office conducted a review of the legal issues raised by the calls. Flynn's ouster appeared to be driven more public at- tention and by the idea that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and other offi- cials than by the content of hisdiscussions.Still,themat- terdeepenedquestionsabout Trump's friendly posture to- ward Russia. "This was an act of trust — whether or not he misled the vice president wastheissueandthatwasul- timatelywhatledtothepres- ident asking for and accept- ing the resignation of Gen. Flynn," Spicer said. Flynn's resignation came after reports that the Justice Department had alerted the White House weeks ago that therewerecontradictionsbe- tween Trump officials' pub- lic accounting of the Rus- sia contacts and what intel- ligence officials knew to be true based on routine re- cordings of communications withforeignofficialswhoare in the U.S. Spicer said White House counsel's office reviewed the situation after it was flagged bytheDepartmentofJustice, andalongwiththepresident, the counsel determined that it did not pose a legal prob- lem.Therevelationswerean- other destabilizing blow to an administration that has already suffered a major le- gal defeat on immigration, botched the implementation of a signature policy and stumbled through a string of embarrassing public rela- tions missteps. White House officials haven't said when Trump was told of the Justice De- partment warning or why Flynn had been allowed to stay on the job with access to a full range of intelligence materials. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R- S.C., a longtime Russia critic, said Congress needs to know what Flynn discussed with the ambassador and why. "The idea that he did this on his own without any di- rection is a good question to ask," Graham added. Pence and others, appar- ently relying on information from Flynn, had said the na- tional security adviser did not discuss U.S. economic sanctionsagainstRussiawith theRussianenvoyduringthe Americanpresidentialtransi- tion. Flynn later told officials the sanctions may have been discussed, the latest change in his account of his pre-in- auguration discussions with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. WHITE HOUSE TrumpwastoldinJanuarythatFlynnmisledPence By Eileen Ng The Associated Press KUALA LUMPUR, MALAY- SIA The half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was assassinated at an airport in Kuala Lumpur, telling medical workers before he died that he had been attacked with a chemical spray, a Malaysian official said Tuesday. Kim Jong Nam, 46, was targeted Monday in the shopping concourse at the airport and had not gone through immigration yet for his flight to Macau, said the senior govern- ment official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the case involves sensitive diplomacy. He was taken to the air- port clinic and then died on the way to the hospital, the official said. Kim Jong Nam was es- tranged from his younger brother, the North Ko- rean leader. He had been tipped by outsiders to suc- ceed their dictator father, but reportedly fell out of favor when he was caught trying to enter Japan on a false passport in 2001, say- ing he wanted to visit To- kyo Disneyland. He was believed to have been liv- ing recently in Macau, Sin- gapore and Malaysia.
