Foryearsandyears,I lived under a dark cloud of worry that I would end up financially destitute, a bag lady. A study conducted by Allianz Life Insur- ance Com- pany of North Amer- ica reveals that I'm not the only one. In fact, most of us have felt that way, not because we're broke but because we don't have con- fidence that we know how to hang on to our money. And that makes us timid, worried and financially in- secure. We don't have to ac- cept financial insecurity as some kind of life sentence. And that constant gnaw- ing fear of becoming desti- tute? Forget it! We can do something about it. Financial confidence is a choice. It's a matter of changing bad habits and choosing to learn simple financial principles. Then, by consciously applying them over and over again, those principles will be- come automatic responses — financial habits. Are you ready to make 2017 your best money year ever? Here are four sim- ple things you can do starting today to improve your financial confidence and take control of your money. GET ANGRY. Decide once and for all that you will not sell your soul to the likes of MasterCard and Visa — not one more day, not one more pur- chase. Get righteously in- dignant about the very idea of transferring your future wealth to those cor- porations. Remember this: The borrower becomes a slave to the lender. Decide right now that you will do whatever it takes to get out of debt. BECOME A SAVER. Sav- ing money is like magic because it changes our at- titudes and calms our fears. The simple act of choosing not to spend money so you can save it is a soul soother, a nerve calmer. You must start now, today, no matter your situation — even if you are in debt, even if you are struggling to catch up and even if you are already contributing to a 401(k) plan or some other kind of retirement account. This is different. You need money in the bank to boost your financial confidence. Start with a dollar, if that is all you can man- age, and stuff it in a cof- fee mug. Then, make it $5. Soon you will be sav- ing $10, $20 and even $50 a week, plus all the change from the sofa cushions and the washing machine. SET A FINANCIAL GOAL. For any plan to suc- ceed, it needs to be specific, reasonable and measur- able. For example, let's say you want to save $2,400 in the coming year, mean- ing about $50 a week. That may be reasonable, pro- vided you are willing to re- ally stretch and make ad- justments in other areas. And you can certainly mea- sure your progress by sim- ply checking your account balance regularly. As you begin to under- stand that money and per- sonal finance are empow- ering, not repulsive, you will open the door to tak- ing control of your fi- nances. You will make progress one step at a time. And single steps taken consistently amount to miles. This year really could be your best money year. It's not a decision that any- one else can make. It's up to you. Wouldyouliketosend a tip to Mary? You can email her at mary@ everydaycheapskate. com, or write to Everyday Cheapskate, 12340 Seal Beach Blvd., Ste. B-416, Seal Beach, CA 90740. EVERYDAYCHEAPSKATE 2017: Your best money year ever REDDING In the month for love and valentines, Writers Forum will offer a much-requested poetry event presented by a duo of eminently qualified Shasta College English instructors 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sat- urday, Feb. 11 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 2150 Benton Drive, Redding. Dr. Sara McCurry has taught in the English De- partment at Shasta College since 2007. She earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Texas State University and a PhD in English from the University of Oregon. She writes poems about the nat- ural world, women's expe- riences including mother- hood, and teaching. She believes deeply in the message written to all on the Missoulian poet Rich- ard Hugo's gravestone: "Be- lieve you and I sing tiny and wise and could if we had to eat stone and go on." Scott Yates grew up in Cottonwood, earned an M.A. in English from San Francisco State University and taught for years in var- ious California community colleges and in Sanaa, Ye- men. He now teaches Eng- lish at Shasta College and lives in Redding. In poems about Yemen, family, his bi- cycle ride to work and other miscellany, Scott seeks to attend to the sounds of his subjects and explore the mysteries of human expe- rience This presentation will in- clude a mini poetry work- shop. Come prepared to participate in writing ex- ercises if you wish. Note a meeting room change for February only. Writers Fo- rum will meet in Eaton Hall East at All Saints Episcopal Church. Writers Forum meets monthly on the second Sat- urday. First two visits to Writers Forum are free. An- nual dues are $25. For further details, visit www.reddingwritersforum. com or write to writersfo- rumprogramchair@gmail. com. WRITERS FORUM Poetryevent scheduled Feb. 11 Mary Hunt By Justin McCuin Social Security manager in Redding Throughout the month of February, we honor Afri- can Americans by celebrat- ing Black History Month. Created in 1926, this event coincides with the birth- days of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and Fred- erick Douglass on Febru- ary 14. African American communities have cele- brated these birthdays to- gether for over a century. Honoring our shared history and reflecting on the past is one way we can remember that in America, we believe in freedom and democracy for all. Another shared belief is that we all deserve a comfortable re- tirement, free of economic hardship. This is part of se- curing today and tomor- row. Social Security has the tools to help you plan for your retirement and to ap- ply for benefits online. We also provide disability ben- efits to individuals with medical conditions that prevent them from work- ing. If the disabled individ- ual has dependent family members, they can also re- ceive payments. If you or anyone you know is disabled, they may qualify for disability ben- efits. Studies show that a 20-year-old worker has a 1-in-4 chance of becom- ing disabled before reach- ing full retirement age. You can see if you meet our strict definition of dis- abled and apply for dis- ability benefits at www. socialsecurity.gov/disabil- ityssi/apply.html. Widows, widowers, and their dependent children may be eligible for Social Security survivors bene- fits. Social Security helps by providing income for the families of workers who die. In fact, 98 of every 100 children could get benefits if a working parent dies. And Social Security pays more benefits to children than any other federal pro- gram. You can learn more about Social Security sur- vivors benefits at www.so- cialsecurity.gov/survivors. Honoring each other begins with fair and equal treatment. Social Security guaran- tees that, if you pay into the system, you will have the same benefits as every- one else according to your earnings record. This Black History Month, we want to make sure our diverse nation is covered and that no one is left out of the benefits they deserve. We are with you through life's journey. LASSEN VOLCANIC Park welcomes acting superintendent Crusius Tehama Sexual Assault Response Team, SART, is proud to be the chosen re- cipient organization for two benefit performances of Eve Ensler's award- winning play "The Vagina Monologues," scheduled for Feb. 17 and 18. The benefit perfor- mances will be presented by V-Day Tehama-Shasta, a local grassroots organi- zation that is part of an in- ternational mission to end violence against women and girls. The shows are sched- uled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 at the Shasta Col- lege Theater in Redding, 11555 Old Oregon Trail; and 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 at the State Theatre, 333 Oak St. in Red Bluff. All proceeds stay local to benefit Tehama SART, a team of community mem- bers from several agencies committed to an organized and comprehensive re- sponse to sexual violence in the community. Its mission is to build com- munication and collab- oration among agencies serving sexual assault sur- vivors and ensure the coor- dination of a prompt, con- sistent and comprehensive multidisciplinary response to sexual violence. Performed by a dedi- cated local cast, "The Va- gina Monologues" is a col- lection of moving, often hi- larious, heart-wrenching stories that share a com- mon theme: the joys, chal- lenges and trials of being a woman. Attendees will hear stories from many aspects of the female ex- perience, with new mono- logues added each year. "The Vagina Mono- logues" delves into wom- en's sexuality, strengths, sisterhood and humor. A few monologues share the pain of rape, abuse and intolerance. The perfor- mance includes adult lan- guage and content and is intended for mature audi- ences; parental guidance is strongly advised. Attendees will be sup- porting Tehama SART, which will include sup- port for local medical ex- aminers who provide fo- rensic medical exams for survivors of sexual vio- lence, necessary equip- ment needed for the ex- ams, training for law en- forcement, examiners and advocates and ongoing re- covery-orientated services for survivors of violence in our community.
