Lastweekwelooked at what we were all born into; our sin nature, and how it pro- duces fruit that is con- trary to the Spirit, bad fruit. This week in Ga- latians chap- ter 5, verses 22-25 we will read of the good fruits produced in a life led by the Spirit. Paul tells us in verse 23 "against such there is no law." There are no laws against the works of the Spirit and the fruit thereof. Romans 8:14 says, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God." Again in Ro- mans 8:26, "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." If we are going to love one another we are depen- dent upon the gifts of the Spirit to do so. I confess, I do not have a chance of treating any of you the way Christ would, apart from the work of the Spirit. My efforts would be contaminated by ugly motives to bring praise to Brandon. I would ma- nipulate and strategize to take advantage of your friendship for selfish pur- poses. You know how I know this, because I have to battle against it in ev- ery area of my life. Colos- sians 3 verses 12-17 lists more good fruits and Paul uniquely concludes there saying, "Whatever I do in word or deed." That's ev- erything. Every move we make. Everything we do that has to do with being alive and breathing and interacting with others presents an opportunity to bear some kind of fruit. Now Paul again — beau- tifully explains in Romans 12:1-2 that the only way we can live a life that exhibits all of these spiritual gifts that we have been read- ing about, the only way to bear spiritual fruit to one another is to deny our- selves. He pleads, "I be- seech you therefore, breth- ren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bod- ies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable ser- vice. And do not be con- formed to this world, but be transformed by the re- newing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." He goes on to list ways we can use our gifts to serve God and one another. Philip- pians 4:8 is an example of how the Word renews our mind; "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is any- thing praiseworthy, medi- tate on these things." Renewing your mind in Christ through the study of God's Word is bear- ing fruit, good fruit, in and of itself. Join me next week as we discover what the scriptures describe as "fake fruit." GODTALK Bearing fruit part 2 Brandon Lengtat Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered recov- ery program, will mark its fifth anniversary at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3 at High Point Assembly of God, 625 Lu- ther Road. The event will feature live music by From the Ashes, mini testimonies and a potluck. For more information, call Celebrate Recovery Leader Ron Freeman at 567-8190. HIGH POINT ASSEMBLY CelebrateRecoverytocelebrate5years By Hasan Zillur Rahim "If you want peace, work for justice. That includes housing the homeless, end- ing the death penalty, orga- nizing labor unions, stand- ing up for minority rights, and countering rising Is- lamophobia in the U.S." So said Dublin-born San Jose Diocese Bishop Patrick Joseph McGrath, leader of more than 50 Catholic churches in Santa Clara County and the prime mover behind the Catholic- Muslim dialogue held at the Shia Association of the Bay Area (SABA) Center on Martin Luther King Day. Bishop McGrath quoted MLK to make his point: "Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correct- ing everything that stands against love." "Xenophobia has always been a part of America's social and political land- scape," he reminded the overflow audience of about 500 Christians and Mus- lims that included San Jo- se's Mayor Sam Liccardo, Police Chief Eddie Garcia and several elected officials. "But we have much more in common than what di- vides us. Both the Bible and the Quran list mercy and justice as foremost di- vine attributes. I ask each one of you to use your light to replace the darkness of hate." Aurora Solis, a Latina leader with San Jose-based 'People Acting in Com- munity Together' (PACT), spoke of a co-worker who told her, "I am a Muslim. I am scared. What will hap- pen to me and my family?" Her response: "I will be with you. My friends and I will register as Muslims if it comes to that. We will work with Muslims so we can be- come better Christians." Tahir Anwar, an imam and a long-time Bay Area activist since 1983, spoke passionately of the Golden Rule, a common theme that unites the major religions of the world: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." He reminded the gather- ing of the Muslim version enunciated by the Prophet Muhammad: "None of you will believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself." "All of us must make a habit of visiting syna- gogues, churches, mosques and other places of wor- ship," he said. "Islamopho- bia poses a threat not just for Muslims but for ev- eryone. If our phones are tapped, yours will be too, sooner or later. The Quran says we will have some good days and some not-so-good days. That is life. But if we work together, we will overcome." Speaker after speaker reminded us of the impor- tance of extending hospital- ity to strangers, not to be haughty but to associate with the lowly, to cherish our diversity, to overcome evil with good, not to suf- fer injustice with silence but to engage in non-violent ac- tivism that can change the world for the better. There is a moral momen- tum growing across Amer- ica. The day after Donald Trump's inauguration, an estimated 200,000 women are expected to participate in the Women's March on Washington. On a smaller scale, this symbolic march will be enacted in cities throughout America, in- cluding San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco. As in other cities, San Jose city leaders approved a campaign to create sanc- tuary places in schools and churches if deportation sweeps occur, while Santa Clara County supervisors allocated $1.5 million to provide legal aid for undoc- umented workers in danger of deportation. The backdrop of where the religious leaders sat at the SABA Center on MLK Day contained these words of Imam Ali (601-661), son- in-law of Prophet Muham- mad: "Man is either your brother in faith, or your equal in humanity." These are Dr. Martin Luther King's words, too, and the words of Ameri- ca's founding fathers, even if expressed differently. MLK's "fierce urgency of now" has taken on a sig- nificance none of us could have contemplated only a few months back.
