Fifty-one years! Gone in a blink of an eye! So much time. You would think that after a half-century it would feel different walking into the house. But it doesn't. When I walk in I get this feeling….a familiar feeling that comes with a swarm of memories accom- panied by familiar surroundings that haven't changed in almost 100 years. Think back a minute with me. Whether you are from the '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, or more current, don't you still remember being there? Don't you remember the columns inside and out, the big staircases, the big fireplace, the huge dining room and sitting with brothers having lunch and dinner? I am sure that just mentioning these things evokes memories… memories that helped chart the course of your life. The Old Gal has left her indelible thumb print on each of us. And she is still doing that. She is building futures and lives for young men just like ours. And, even though it is 2016, the undergraduates are not much different than us. Once you are among them, you im- mediately sense a bond of brotherhood. They like being part of the fraternity, they like living with each other, and there is a pride and knowledge about who they are as Alpha Sigs on campus. They are the strongest they have been in 50 years. They pledged 30 pledges, one of the largest classes since my class of 40 in 1965 and the 40 in 1966. They're excited about running the house and eager to carry on traditions as well as make new ones. They still ring the chimes at dinner on Monday night—the same chime that has been used for nearly 75 years. You can hear the tones in your ears right now, can't you? They always dress nice on campus and on Mondays the pledges wear suits to campus because, as HSP Ben Nogawa '15 says, "What we look like on campus matters." Sound familiar? They are active and good in intramurals, very popular with sororities, leaders on campus with extensive philanthropy, and they do this while maintaining their grades with a whole house average of 3.3 or higher. Four brothers maintained 4.0s last school year. Mu is over 100 years old. Our physical plant is quickly approaching 100 years and it is rapidly and trag- ically disintegrating, falling apart, and collapsing inside. This issue of Musings has a pictorial coverage showing why we, as alumni, need to do everything we can to preserve the Old Gal so future generations can prosper and enjoy the life-changing experience of living at 4554 19th NE like all of us graduates have. For decades, class after class has done the hard work of building Mu and getting her where she is today. Thousands of lives have been touched and changed. We have success- fully bettered the man! Hundreds of men. And I would venture to say that one of those men is you.
