F or the past year, I have been proud to serve as HSP, and as my term enters its final month, I am excited to say that the Old Gal is stronger than ever. We have made incredible strides over the last year. Thanks to the leadership of Scholarship Chairman Brian Minard '15, we have become an academic powerhouse. Spring quarter we achieved the impressive house GPA of 3.40, with nearly a quarter of active brothers making the Dean's List. What makes this feat even more impressive is the diversity of majors present in the house. Undergraduate brothers are thriving in incredibly competitive fields such as neurobiology, computer science, and bio engineering. Thanks to the hard work of the recruitment team, this summer we signed the largest pledge class in half a century, as well as the largest pledge class on campus. These 30 incredible young men are passionate and excited to become an active part of the house. They bring an energy that will help drive the growth of the Old Gal and ensure that she will thrive for years to come. As one generation of Alpha Sigs is beginning their undergrad- uate experience, the older generations of undergraduates are looking to have an impact on the world after college. Brothers like senior Bryan Bednarski '15 will be working after gradu- ation in NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. These young men are entering the world with the invaluable set of skills that only those who have been a part of this incredible brotherhood can understand. Words cannot describe how blessed I feel to have been able to serve as president. I have had the privilege of meeting many of you, and hearing the passion in your voices as you talk about your time as an undergraduate has driven me to do better. It is with a heavy heart that I leave office, but I know that the drive and passion of the next generation of young leaders will continue to fuel the Old Gal. I know that when I return years from now, I will still have the same feeling in my heart that emerged the first time I stepped through those two front doors. By Benjamin Nogawa '15 MESSAGE FROM CHAPTER PRESIDENT Photo by Will Wilson T his fall quarter, the UW Alpha Sigs have continued their unrelenting support for multiple local non-profit organizations. One of the core philanthro- pies for the brotherhood is Strong Against Cancer. In September, a group of brothers made a trip to Seattle's Fremont Bridge where they decorated the "Waiting for the Interurban" statues with T-shirts, signs, and other gear to raise awareness for Strong Against Cancer, supporting the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research during National Pediatric Cancer Awareness month. These statues, standing in one of Seattle's highest traffic corridors, are popular props for messaging and social comments. After the great experience supporting the Ben Towne founda- tion, it was a natural next step for the brothers to work along- side Seattle Children's Hospital and their Strong Against Cancer campaign. During the seventh week of the academic quarter, the Alpha Sigs raised over $4,000 for Strong Against Cancer during its annual Phight for Life weekend. They raised awareness for Strong Against Cancer on campus through posters and the distribution of pamphlets. During winter quarter the Alpha Sigs will continue to raise money for Strong Against Cancer through its annual Talisman Rose Queen Competition. Throughout fall quarter, UW Alpha Sigs participated in many other community unifying events benefiting many local char- ities. One of the most popular events was working alongside Canine Companions for Independence, a foundation with a long-standing relationship with the brotherhood at Alpha Sigma Phi. Canines for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.
