Adams, who served as vice chairman this year, replaces outgoing chairman Marshall Faircloth. Commissioner Charles Evans was elected to serve as vice chairman for the year. Three commissioners took the oath of office during the meeting. Newcomer Michael Boose was sworn in along with returning Commissioners Faircloth and Jimmy Keefe. The commissioners also recognized Kenneth Edge for his 16 years of service. Edge, who had served as a commissioner since 2000, did not seek reelection this year. County Offices Closed Dec. 23, 26-27 for Holidays Cumberland County Government offices and the court system will be closed Friday, Dec. 23, and Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 26 and 27, for the Christmas holiday. Low-Income Heating Assistance Available The Salvation Army is accepting applications for the North Carolina Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) to help qualified families with their heating costs. Citizens may apply 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Salvation Army office at 1047 Southern Ave. For more information, contact the Department of Social Services LIEAP message line at 910- 677-2821 or the Salvation Army at 910-307-0359. The federally-funded program provides a one-time vendor payment directly to the utility company to help eligible households pay their heating bills during cold-weather months. Household income must not exceed 130 percent of the poverty level. Only households with a person age 60 and older or a disabled individual receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services can apply through Dec. 31, or until funds are exhausted. All other households may apply from Jan. 1 through March 31, or until funds are exhausted. Taxpayers Reminded of Deadline, Listings The Cumberland County Tax Administration Office reminds citizens that property taxes for real estate and personal property listed in January 2016 will be delinquent if not paid by Jan. 5, 2017. Interest and enforced collections such as bank levy, wage/rent garnishments, and/or foreclosure will begin on Jan. 6, 2017. Interest and collection fees will be added to the tax amount due. County covernment offices and the Courthouse will be closed Dec. 23-27 for the Christmas holiday. Offices will again be closed on Monday, Jan. 2, for New Year's Day. Tax Administration reminds citizens of these closings and to plan appropriately. Make payments in person at Room 527 on the fifth floor of the Courthouse, 117 Dick St., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. To pay by phone, call 1-866-441-6614.
