Page 8 Indiana Gammas In The News Butler University Alumni Recognition Award Announced During Homecoming Weekend B utler University hosted its annual alumni awards recognition program for extraordinary professional achievement and service to the university and their communities as part of 2016 Homecoming weekend festivities. Our very own Chris Wirthwein '79 and his wife, Sally, received the Ovid Butler Society Mortar Award, which honors one person or couple each year who personifies the Butler spirit by demonstrating great vision, leadership, and generosity to Butler University. Chris, the CEO of Carmel, Indiana, marketing firm, 5MetaCom, and Sally served as cabinet members for the campaign for Hinkle Fieldhouse. They also were co-creators of and donors to the Hinkle Fieldhouse History Museum Exhibit located in Hinkle Fieldhouse Concourse. Their philanthropy funded several of the historical displays featured in the south lobby. Sally promotes the fieldhouse through her twitter account, @HistoricHinkle, and has assisted several media outlets with information and photographs for their stories on Hinkle. Sally is serving her fourth term as a facility corporation board member of Gamma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta. Chris served as board chairman of the Indiana Gamma housing corporation from 2004-06. Chris's brother, Kevin Wirthwein '76, and sisters, Susan and Lisa, are Butler alumni, and his grandfather, Wilbur Fillmore Dassel, attended Indiana Law School at Butler in the 1920s. Chris and Sally's daughter, Grace, is a 2013 Butler graduate and a member of the Young Alumni Board. Indiana Gamma's Frederic B. Lowrie Jr. '71 Recognized with Legion of Merit at Convention B rother Frederic B. "Ted" Lowrie Jr. '71 was initiated into the Indiana Gamma Chapter at Butler University on March 17, 1968, and led his Chapter as president during his senior year. Brother Lowrie has served in the volunteer ranks of Phi Delta Theta for 25 years. He was a province president for 13 years, a survey commissioner for six years, and a member of the Joint Investment Committee. Ted became a Phi Delta Theta Foundation trustee in 2008 and continues to serve and support the Foundation. He has also given back generously to his Chapter through the Foundation by funding a Whole Man Scholarship (WMS) for members of Indiana Gamma. Each WMS recipient is invited to the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute to participate in the Honors College of Phi Delta Theta's Leadership and Ethics Academy and is given a scholarship. Brother Lowrie is a third- generation Phi following his grandfather from Michigan Alpha at the University of Michigan and his father from New York Alpha at Cornell University. He and his wife, Kathleen McShane, have five adult children and five grandchildren. For his lifelong dedication and commitment to Phi Delta Theta, the Fraternity is proud to honor Brother Frederic B. "Ted" Lowrie Jr. with the Legion of Merit. The Legion of Merit Award honors those outstanding members of our Fraternity who have made a lifelong commitment to the service of Phi Delta Theta. The recipients of this award are not only living testimony that Phi Delta Theta is a "Fraternity for Life," but they are also the men who give this phrase meaning for so many of us. Latest Indiana Gamma Iron Phi C ongrats to Phi Delta Theta at Butler University's Jeff Carter '19 for becoming Iron Phi #558. He has raised $1,601.50 and completed the Indianapolis Heart Walk. Jeff joins the ranks of Indiana Gamma Iron Phis including Justin Abbott '12, Joe Perin '15, Robert Beckett '14, Mike Schau '16, and Hugh Diehl '75. (Continued on page 10)
