"Bill" Ackley '55 entered Chapter Grand on April 18 at the age of 97. Born on a wheat and cattle farm near Portis, Kan., Bill made the best of reality since the 1920s. He met his wife, Bobby Clark, when they were students at Kansas State University, from where they both graduated. ey married in 1941 in Arlington, Va. At the start of World War II, Bill joined the U.S. Navy and served as an aerial photographer primarily based on Guadalcanal. Later, at Pensacola, Fla., he trained pilots in flying techniques that facilitate good photography. Aer the war, he and Bobby returned to Kansas State, where he earned an M.S. in horticulture, a subject that pro- vided both interest and job prospects. When Bill took an assistantship at Washington State University in 1947, the family moved to Pullman. Aer his retirement in 1983, he and Bobby traveled extensively, touring Europe, Alaska, and the Pacific Rim, including China. ey spent their winters in Southern California, drawn by a love of golf that also took them to many interesting courses around the world. Bill was preceded in death by Bobby in 2010 aer 69 years of marriage. Alumni News James S. Williams '65 worked for the Washington State Patrol for 33 years. He has been retired for 15 years.
