I have learned a great deal about Quartzsite and all of SW Arizona from reading her feature. (Her arti- cles about her travels elsewhere are fun as well.) I have always thought of that part of AZ as 120 degree sand, occupied from season to season with people strange enough to endure that en- vironment. GJ's writing style brings Quartzsite to life as many of her articles are about the area, such as the October 19th DM issue's story about The Desert Bar. That article, amongst others, could lure me out of Flagstaff for an ex- tended visit. Thanks again! Sherman Stephens Flagstaff, AZ PS I have enjoyed some of GJ's po- etry entries in the DM as well. CHIPPER RULES Living here in Quartzsite has many perks and we choose to make our home here because of those perks. The county dump site (transfer sta- tion) is one of those perks. In many counties in Arizona, they charge you to dump your household rub- bish. Here it is free. Winter hours it is open Sunday through Wednesday 7:30 to 2:30. Another town perk we enjoy is the Chipper. The rules to obey is that no household garbage of any kind can be dumped at the Chipper site, (easy rule, since the transfer site is a very short distance away from the Chipper site). And this rule is clearly marked on the route to the Chipper site. On Saturday, October 29th, my wife and I made three (3) trips out to the Chipper site dropping off dead trees, branches, and limbs broken off trees. Our fi rst trip out was about 8:00 am, our second trip was at 10:00 am and our third trip was at 12 noon. On our third trip we noticed 3 boxes stacked nice and neat on top of a fairly new pile of limbs, plants and other appropri- ate Chipper items. My wife walked over and picked up one of the boxes and exclaimed, "the wind must have blown these three boxes out of the back of someone's truck". I men- tioned to her, they did not blow out, they are neatly stacked in a row, had the windblown them, they would be scattered all over the Chipper site. One way we lose many of our special perks is by disobeying the laws, by the actions of a few, we tend to lose more and more of our rights and privileges . So I ponder this ques- tion, " What part of: No dumping trash, violators will be prosecuted. Do folks NOT understand?" WE ARE BACK for another season! You create everything with your thoughts, so be careful with your sayings. I hear people talk about how the Town used to be. Well, "used to be" is all gone! We must create the now. It is up to us! The people who live here and have a business here. Let's create a beau- tiful now; a beautiful future for Quartzsite. Patricia Meissner Quartzsite
