PAGE 3 Hoffman made a remarkable impact on Dean's collegiate experience and inspired him to strive for excellence in all aspects of life. Sadly, several of Dean's brothers lost their lives in WWII; including Bob McKay by a Kamikaze attack at Okinawa and George McPherson '42, EO 290 during the battle of Iwo Jima. "These men taught me to work hard, be patient, and do the best I can every day and, as a result, I developed the confidence needed to pursue future opportunities," he says. "It is my hope that future generations of brothers will be provided experiences and relationships that are just as valuable as the ones I gained in Epsilon Omicron." Because Dean knows an attractive, well-maintained Chapter House is a tremendous source of pride for undergraduates and alumni alike, supporting Epsilon Omicron's campaign became inherently part of who Dean is. "Epsilon Omicron consistently recruits top-notch individuals who exemplify our Fraternity's values and make a difference in our community," Dean says. "Our Chapter has upheld its commitment to maintaining positive relations on campus and building upon our already vast alumni network. As alumni, we have a responsibility to provide them with a safe, modern facility that is indicative of the excellence our brotherhood has attained." Dean encourages alumni to remember their Epsilon Omicron roots and be a driving force in the future of the Chapter. He told us "Each of us gained something unique from our experiences in Sigma Nu, and for that reason, we must give back to the place that gave us so much. Alumni involvement is critical to the continued success of Epsilon Omicron, and your support will ensure the Fraternity's prominent standing on campus for years to come." Dean retired in 1991 from the construction company he founded in 1960 and was appointed by Governor Wilson in January 1994 to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Business, Transportation, and Housing. One of his most satisfying accomplishments as Secretary was overseeing the restoration of the many failed bridges in Los Angeles following the Northridge earthquake in 1994. In his spare time, you will likely find Dean playing golf or spending time with his children, grandchildren, and his lovely wife, Barbara, in La Jolla, California. Those of us who attended the Holding Corporation's pregame party prior to the 2015 Holiday Bowl in San Diego got to spend some quality time with Brother Dean…and it was more fun than watching the Trojans lose to Wisconsin. You can contact Dean at ddunphy1@san.rr.com. Dedicated to the Future of Epsilon Omicron (Continued from page 1) Dean Dunphy '43, EO 310 showcases his Sigma Nu ring. Chapter Sets Plans in Motion for Future Projects W e continue to improve the conditions of the Chapter House. Our goal is to make Sigma Nu the best house on the row and a facility in which our younger brothers want to live. Below are a few of the ongoing projects we have slated to complete in the near future: • Refurnish and redesign the Heritage Room. We are going to remove the pool table and design the front room as more of a pub/media room where the actives have a comfortable place to not only interact but view sporting events on both flat-screen TVs. • Install a different type of floor finish throughout the common areas. The polished concrete look never made the house a warm place. We are researching a different type of finish that will not only brighten up the house and be durable, but will make the areas have more of a house feeling than a commercial feeling. • The wood staircase continues to be a bit of an eyesore. We continue to paint it multiple times a year, but wood is not a good long-term finish. We are going to clad the staircase in some type of material that will be durable and aesthetically pleasing. • We are going to remove the wood bench seating around the front barbecue area and replace it with either a composite material or something that will last and look good. • We are looking into a retractable awning structure to cover the sport court so the actives can utilize the area for events, even during the daytime hours. This should also cool the house and diminish the load on the air conditioning in the hot months. We appreciate all brothers who have pledged monies for remodeling purposes at the house, but as we all know from experience, 40 actives living in the house takes its toll. Also, with 125 brothers attending guest functions held at the house, this causes more wear-and-tear than the average facility. Keeping this structure up to standards is an ongoing task and takes resources. We thank you for all of your support and hope you have an opportunity to come by and see what we have done and continue to do. Fraternally, Robert Dreyfuss '73, EO 760 E psilon Omicron continues to improve both academically and philanthropically. The Chapter achieved an overall 3.4 GPA last fall and continues to engage in philanthropic activities such as the sand volleyball tournament and Christmas bonfire, which benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The Sigma Nu Parents' Club is also actively involved with the Chapter. The club hosts three events during the academic year: the Parents' Weekend barbecue, the candlelight dinner right before the Christmas holiday break, and the graduating seniors dinner in the spring. The Holding Corporation, Parents' Club, and active Chapter are organizing a networking event this fall, where alumni will meet with members of the active Chapter and discuss what their career plans are. We will e-mail you with the date and time of this event and would like your participation. Fraternally, Rick Murphy '80, EO 927 Alumni involvement Boosts ChApter suCCess
