GAMMA PHI BETA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS News Fall 2016 Sigma Sigma Soars to New Heights Chapter Achieves All-Time High GPA I am thrilled to be writing you again as president of Sigma Chapter. I found such a deep love and compassion for the women here at the University of Kansas that I decided to run for my second year as president. This opportunity has taught me more than I would have ever imagined, and I know that it is the best way to spend my senior year. THIRD ON THE HILL FOR GRADES Sigma chapter has had a wonderful year filled with love, labor, learning, and loyalty. Last semester, we earned the highest average number of community service hours in all of the Panhellenic community. We also earned "third on the hill" for our grades with a 3.43 GPA! In fact, we received the BEST chapter average for grades that Gamma Phi at the University of Kansas has ever seen. We started off the fall semester with an outstanding recruitment, adding 70 new members to our chapter. They have been busy with their new member education program, serenades, participating in campus and service activities, and getting to know all of our actives as we look forward to their initiation. GOLFING FOR A CAUSE Our annual fall philanthropy, the Eileen Teahan Memorial Golf Tournament, was held September 24 at Alvamar Country Club. Twenty-five teams of golfers enjoyed playing in the event that was hosted by our members. Katie Rogler '13, our philanthropy chairman, commented, "We raised over $5,300 this year and the atmosphere and support we had was unbelievable. Having all the participants, donors, and Gamma Phis gather together to raise money in memory of Eileen, was very special, especially since Shannon Teahan '16, Eileen's niece, is a member of our new pledge class." COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT This fall Panhellenic started a new program to match Greek houses with different organizations in Lawrence, and we are excited to be a part of the Communities in Schools program, being paired with Kennedy Elementary School. Our members are helping out with tutoring, special events, clubs, the school store, and being lunch buddies. Gamma Phis are enjoying working with the students, while following International Gamma Phi Beta's philanthropic focus, "Building Strong Girls." In ΠΚΕ, Paige Lueker '13 Chapter President kugphipresident@gmail.com Seniors Caitlin Quirin '13, Maddie Umali '13, and Katherine Hyde '13 on their final Preference Day. Gamma Phi Beta alumnae participated in a mock recruitment party before fall recruitment began. The collegians gave house tours, performed songs, and engaged in lively conversations with the alumnae. M ore than 1,000 Gamma Phi Betas celebrated sisterhood in Atlanta, Georgia, at the 2016 Gamma Phi Beta Convention, "Making Our Mark," held June 22-25. Memories were made as collegians and alumnae experienced an exciting week, growing their leadership skills and participating in business sessions, workshops, delicious meals, and fun events from the opening ceremony to the closing Pink Carnation Banquet. Sally Ramseyer Beck '74, Paige Lueker '13, Maddy Berberet '14, and Anna Eschrich '15 represented Sigma Chapter. Other Sigma attendees included Barbara Bauerle Glanz '62, Anna Starks '06, and Susan Guder Gurwell '92.
