"To this day, I still have vivid memories from my undergraduate years," he said. "I smile and laugh inside thinking about them. It makes me wish I could go back and do it all over again." Chad notes joining Delta Tau Delta as the turning point of his college career. He struggled his first semester going from the big fish in a small pond in high school to the small fish in a big pond at Butler, until he discovered the support system he needed through Beta Zeta. "Joining Delt helped bring out who I was at my core, and it helped refine who I am as a man and leader today," he said. "The reason I wanted to join a fraternity was to better myself and it was obvious to me that this was the same thing the brothers of Beta Zeta wanted from their fraternity experiences as well." During his time as an undergraduate, Chad remembers Steve vedra '02, Derek Burns '04, lee rhea '02, russell nichols '02, and randy Claybrook, Alabama, '88 having an incredible positive impact on chapter operations and his personal growth. "Those five men not only helped put Beta Zeta back on the map, but they were also instrumental in expanding the Shelter to house 64 members." Chad offers two pieces of advice for current members. "The first is to use every minute of your undergraduate years. Say 'yes' to everything. Once you know your grades are where they need to be—get involved," he said. "Then, get to know each of your brother 's stories. Your investment in getting to know them could lead to a stronger relationship with that brother. Don't ever close the door on a relationship. At a minimum, show each brother a high level of respect." Chad credits the opportunities he had during his college years as instrumental to him becoming a teacher and eventually high school principal. Although he retired from the education field at the conclusion of the 2014-15 school year, his fraternity experience proves to be beneficial in his new career at Miller Insurance Group. To date, 45 percent of his business comes as a result of a fraternity connection. Recently, Chad agreed to become the Beta Zeta Chapter Advisor. He looks forward to playing a similar role as the Delt alumni who made a positive impact during his undergraduate years. Additionally, to stay involved, he donates to both the Beta Zeta capital campaign and the national fraternity. "I will be forever grateful of the Greek system, Delta Tau Delta Beta Zeta Chapter, and my brothers for a life-changing college experience," he said. I t was the spring of 1955 when Walter hap '59 first visited Beta Zeta. He had just been offered a football scholarship to Butler when his high school coach, a Butler alumnus, took him and two teammates to campus, dropped them off at Beta Zeta, and told the three of them he'd be back in a couple days. "We were shown a wonderful time," Walt said. "That weekend I realized that this was the place I could fit in, and I could have a very happy and successful college experience being a member of Delta Tau Delta." Throughout his undergraduate years Walt held several offices and stayed active on campus. But it wasn't until February 10, 1956, that Walt had the most memorable night of his undergraduate years. That was the night he took his future Delta Gamma wife, Rita Taylor, on their first date to the Valentine's Day dance. Three years later, on June 8, Walt graduated, a n d 1 2 d a y s l a t e r, o n J u n e 2 0 , 1 9 5 9 , h e married Rita. That July he started his first job in pharmacy and worked at the Gwinn Drug Store in Rita's hometown until he reported to Ft. Leonard Wood in March of 1960. After six years in the active Army Reserve, Walt received his honorable discharge and was no longer subject to being activated. On May 29, 1966, the couple purchased a pharmacy in partnership with Butler alumnus Harry R. Shirk, and handled the bulk of prescription business in Union City, Ind. In 1993, Walt sold The Apothecary Shoppe and went on an extended vacation with Rita. While on the trip, the couple stopped to visit Joe reynolds '58 at his pharmacy in Poseyville, Ind. "We hadn't seen or spoken with Joe in 35 years, but when we walked up to his counter and greeted him we all were elated," Walt said. The three spent hours reminiscing their college years and discussed how nice it would be to have a reunion. On the drive home, Rita and Walt discussed organizing a reunion, and although it seemed impossible at the time, Walt contacted Indianapolis brothers and presented the idea to them. A committee was formed and the team decided to locate brothers from 1955 to 1959. (Continued on page 4) A Day at a Time Walter Hap '59 Recounts Delta Tau Delta Memories Down to the Date
