24 UCW JULY 20-26, 2016 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Summer has certainly turned up the heat. As we all know, it has been hot, hot, hot! There is something hateful about hot days. It has a burn to it. On a motorcycle, every mile seems longer and longer as the temperature goes up. It makes every red light seem like weeks. Everything about the ride becomes super sensitive. The heat is dangerous and can even be deadly. Here are a few things that will help you ride and survive in the heat: • Don't drink alcohol. • Carry water on your bike. Don't forget about your passenger. • Get up early and ride early. • Don't wait until you are thirsty to drink water — hydrate. • Wear eye protection or sunglasses. • Have a well-vented helmet. • Wear cotton shirts. • Soak your shirt in cold water at a bathroom and wear down the road — it is like an air conditioner. • Although dew rags look cool, they trap in heat. • Park your bike in shaded areas when possible. • Wear vented clothes. • Don't sacrifice safety for comfort's sake. • Wear sunscreen. • Water, water, water — stay hydrated. On really hot days, if you stop sweating, you are in trouble. Get water and cool off. If things don't make sense, you are in trouble. Get water and cool off. If you are riding with a friend and they seem abnormal, then they are in trouble. Get them water and cool off. One of the less noted dangers of the heat is that people are just irritable. I don't know what it is, but when people are hot (even in an air conditioned car), they don't seem to pay attention and sometimes drive aggressively. Either way, people seem to drive more erratic. This is more of a danger to bikers than to themselves, so we have to be vigilant in watching our surroundings. Be careful out there and stay cool!
