J Issue #154 Vol. 8 www.DesertMessenger.com UNE 13, 2012 "Quartzsite's FREE Community Paper" Final class from Scholars' Academy graduates Quartzsite, AZ - The Scholars' Acedemy came to an emotional end Saturday, June 9, 2012 when the graduating Class of 2012 received their diplomas. The Church of Latter Day Saints was the scene of mixed emotions as Principal Steve McClenning said good-bye to the graduates, faculty and community. Once everything is fi nalized, the communities, parents and students will be notifi ed and enrollment will be solicited. Quartzsite election investigations continue Quartzsite, Arizona - In an unprece- dented move, Quartzsite Town Coun- cil held a special meeting June 4th, to canvass the votes and judge the quali- fi cations of three candidates who were elected May 15th. Town Attorney, Martin Brannan explained the can- vass was to accept "the count that was presented by the [county] elections department". After three executive sessions, the council determined mayor-elect Ed Foster wasn't qualifi ed to serve as mayor. They also judged candidate Mark Orgeron was not qualifi ed to serve. Council determined Pat Orgeron was qualifi ed to serve and was sworn in Wednesday, June 5th (see photo Page 7). State law (ARS 9-234A) states that councils may judge the qualifi cations and elections of their members. Quartzsite Town Code Section 2-1- 10 (Ordinance 9-15) disqualifi es can- didates that "includes no delinquent or fi xed fi nes, and penalties, user fees, permit fees and sales tax be owed to the Town of Quartzsite at the time of declaration of candidacy." Also at the June 4th meeting, Town Manager Alex Taft reported an inves- tigation has "identifi ed approximate- ly168 voters that we need to look at more thoroughly, for a variety of rea- sons; out of state license plates, out of state registration, mailing addresses that are out of state, people who have not had their rights restored voting, SEE ELECTION PAGE 5 The Gathering Place of Quartzsite for Good Food, Fun and Friendship! Speeches by Mrs. Christina Carter, Salutatorians Miriam Tinoco and Melissa Carter, Valedictorian Berenice Delfi n, and Principal Steve McClenning were enjoyed before awarding the diplomas. Family and friends celebrated with cake afterwards. The Scholars' Academy lost its charter renewal, and is currently ories of the eleven gradutates. A tradition of the Scholars' Academy brought tears when the graduates delivered red roses to their family and friends in gratitude for their support over the years.
