Like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com /DesertMessenger Playing for health "Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigo- rates the Soul" is a wonderful book written by Stuart Brown, founder of the National Institute for Play, co-au- thored with Christopher Vaughan. Brown leads an inspiring video at Serious Play TED conference called "Play is more than fun". In our industrial, get-it-done-at-all- cost world, rarely is there ever time for play in our lives, let alone in the workplace. But Brown challenges us to think differently about the impor- tance play is for a healthy community. We were born to play. Play is simple. When we forget the sheer pleasure of the power of play in our lives, we can take everything way too seriously. Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game. ~ Michael Jordan Watch Quartzsite Videos @ www.QuartzsiteVideos.com Follow on Twitter @DesertMessenger @QuartzsiteRain of the Desert Messenger Email: desertmessenger7@yahoo.com DEADLINE is WED. The students and faculty could not have achieved this success without incorporating play into the classroom. Attendees at Saturday night's graduation heard just how much humor was appreciated in the classroom. We all learn when the learning is easy. Easy... What has been easy in Quartzsite politics recently? I know, that was a leap from fun to not so fun, but that's my point. People are getting caught up in feelings of frustration, with how "the system" is not working, and turning issues into personal attacks. Many have totally forgotten that life is not all about how one side being right and the other being wrong. Remember when we were children? We played for the simple pleasure of joy. It wasn't until we grew older that we played to win and bought into the belief that losing was bad. There it is again, that "Belief System" (B.S.) Everything can be turned into play, just as I did with the words, "Belief System". Anything can gain more joy through adding play and creativity. Imagine your job bringing more play and therefore more joy into the workplace? How, you ask? Just do it. If you can't think of a way to bring DESERT June 13, 2012 more play and creative spirit into the workplace, send emails to employees asking for suggestions. Do one a week and see how the energy of the offi ce becomes energized. With the Spirit of Play people are resourceful, resilient, creative, seek- ing mastery, going with the fl ow, risk taking and JOYFUL. With more joy, people are healthier and more active. Imagine creating play for the sake of play without the fear of what others think of you. That is what is needed in our community. There's so much fi nger pointing and blame going on, folks just don't want to get involved for fear of being at- tacked. So, get over it, and get on with your own Game of Life. We have a great opportunity to en- gage in play at our upcoming Fourth of July celebration at Town Park. Tracey needs some help getting it all accomplished. I'd like to challenge folks in Quartz- site to join together and make a day of play for the Annual Fourth of July Event in the Park. Also start thinking about what you're grateful for. There'll be a unique opportunity for you to express that gratitude, so start thinkin! How will you contribute to a more playful community? If your organiza- tion would like to participate, please let Tracey know how you want to "play". If there's some musicians out there that would like to play, contact Tracey at 928- 927-4333. Spread the word and fi nd others who want to play along. Oh, yeah, and "Play Nice". Bobby McFerrin sang "Don't Worry, Be Happy"!
