10 www.DesertMessenger.com June 15, 2016 By Maggie Ross Summer is here and we have been slowed down by record tempera- tures in Quartzsite and impacted by the fact that our winter Snow- bird visitors are gone. Vendors have left, many of the local busi- nesses and restaurants are closed and we are in a quiet lull until fall. It is for many of our locals a diffi- cult time of survival, both economi- cally and physical. This is the perfect time of year for the community to think of what Thrivent "Action Teams" can do to help! Last year I was fortunate as your Thrivent Representative, to help submit over 30 "Action Team" projects to help in Passing It For- ward in Quartzsite. Food was provided for the Quartzsite Food Bank to help with the holidays. Funds were submit- ted to Friends of the Quartzsite Food Bank to help with summer needs. Sports equipment was donated to the local elementary school. Canned goods were pur- chased for Isaiah 58 Food Pantry. Funding and items were given to the Operation Hero Comfort Proj- ect. Signage for our local museum. Thrivent Action Teams Dust 'N Denim 4-H group received funds for their kids to use. Projects were sponsored in conjunction with our local VFW, and the list goes on and on. There are thousands of dollars available to individuals, churches, and organizations to make a differ- ence in your community. Why wait until Fall to begin submitting? If your organization is planning a fundraiser or event, contact me. If your youth organization needs help for camp this summer or raising monies for other items needed, By Maggie Ross Two Saturdays in May, local artist, Sharon Noller, held a FREE jewelry class for the youth of this commu- nity. These classes were sponsored by Thrivent Financial through one of their "Action Team" projects. It was a way to pass it forward to our young people and a way for Sharon to introduce them to the art form of beading and jewelry design. Fun with local artist Each class had room for 12 stu- dents, provided an afternoon snack, a free "Living Generously T-Shirt." and allowed students to design and keep individual pieces of jewelry which included necklac- es, bracelets, and earrings. It was sad to only see three students show up for the first free class. The three students who attended had a won- derful time and went home with a new sense of accomplishment and some lovely pieces of jewelry to show for their hard work. They enjoyed the class so much that they asked to return for the second class and brought a couple of their friends bringing the class count to five. Despite the small number in at- tendance, it was a delightful expe- rience for all. It is hoped that as school is soon out that other artists will share their talents in this way with our youth this summer. Dol- lars are available to help sponsor future classes through Thrivent "Action Teams" contact Maggie Ross, 360- 490 8175. You are also invited to see more of Sharon Noller's beautiful art work which is presently on display at the Quail Restaurant on Moon Moun- tain Road. DEADLINE : WED.
