A Publication of the Zeta Phi Chapter of Beta Theta Pi The Zeta Phi SPRING 2016 T he Zeta Phi Chapter was recognized as first in grades for the overall Greek community (3.451 GPA) as well as for new members (3.562 GPA). We were awarded a $500 scholarship from IFC, which was dedicated to the Paul Miltenberger Scholarship Fund. This scholarship was established to honor the life of our brother, Paul '17, who passed away last April. Our Foundation's board has graced 14 of our members with scholarships, which make a tremendous impact on those members' lives and builds a stronger alumni- student relationship. The members of the Zeta Phi Chapter have remained very involved on campus. We continue to have many members leading student councils, clubs, philanthropies, and participating in sports. The chapter was recently recognized for winning the Rally for Rhyan contest at a Mizzou basketball game. We had the highest attendance of any fraternity at the basketball game, which raised money to fight Rhyan's cancer. Last year, a few active members worked to found a charity hockey game against Sigma Chi. The game had a great start last year, raising more than $17,000. In this year's event, the Beta hockey team secured a 6-0 victory against the rival Sigma Chi. The final amount raised is estimated to be near $25,000. This has been a very successful event the last two years that brings the chapter together for a great cause. Beta's annual 7-on-7 philanthropy football tournament has also remained a successful event. Beta intramural teams are performing better than they have in recent years. We currently have a commanding first place lead and hope to carry that throughout the year. We have a great team in place for the recruitment process. This group is led by Head Recruitment Chairman Dominic Polizzi '17, St. Louis Recruitment Chairman Jay Travis '18, and Kansas City Recruitment Chairman Cole Connors '18. Dominic is an accounting major from St. Louis and attended CBC High School. Jay is also from St. Louis and attended Kirkwood High School. Cole is from Kansas City and he graduated from Blue Springs South High School. The recruitment process has gotten off to a great start this spring, as we had many potential new members tour the house and meet many active members. Throughout the summer, we will take prospective members to dinners, St. Louis Cardinals games, Kansas City Royals games, paintballing, golfing, formal recruitment events, and many other activities. Our great recruitment team is very dedicated to finding the best members for Zeta Phi and continuing to form Men of Principle. Dominic can be contacted at rush@missouribeta.com. Like many Beta of my time, I had no real connection to the General Fraternity. That changed in 2002 with one call from former Foundation Board of Directors Chairman, Tom Hook, Miami '81. The son of fellow Zeta Phi brother and Oxford Cup recipient Harold Hook '53, Tom asked if I would travel to Oxford, Ohio, and learn about the Fraternity's newest initiative: Men of Principle. Little did I know that those three words would not only be the intervention we needed to save our Fraternity from obsolescence, but also restore Beta as a leader among Greek organizations. The Men of Principle initiative allowed for the creation of our award-winning leadership programs, which thousands of Betas attend each year, and I give in part because I know there are others who still wish to make their own connections to Oxford and the General Fraternity. Tom gave me my chance, and I hope to give them theirs. Through the Beta Foundation's capital campaigns like Promises to Keep, we're developing future leaders for Beta and society. By including the Fraternity in my estate plans, I'm supporting programs that will secure the future of Beta Theta Pi and our 135 chapters and colonies for generations to come. Dr. Healy obtained his bachelor's and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Missouri, where he now serves on the Dean's Engineering Advisory Council and Planned Giving Advisory Committee after a long and successful career at ExxonMobil. Additionally, he serves on Beta's Foundation Board of Directors. Robert and his wife, Marcia, live in Houston, Texas.
