Zeta Phi F ollowing the public issues and controversies last fall, fewer prospective students have been applying to the University of Missouri according to a memorandum from the Office of Enrollment sent to a number of administrators and faculty on January 4, 2016. Applications from incoming freshmen have dropped nearly five percent since last year and are lower than the five-year average between semesters. However, spring opening day numbers for the past two years look almost identical. While MU still faces many challenges following the unexpected events last fall, change is underway. The events have forced MU as a whole to re-examine its priorities and reinvigorate its leadership. The university does not take the situation lightly and is actively working toward a solid solution by listening to its students, reflecting on what they have to say, and pushing each other to be better. Mizzou students, faculty, and staff are all learning from the mistakes and missteps arising from the situation last fall, and we are all hopeful for a positive transformation. In the meantime, our focus at MU is still on academics, and the regular business of education has continued since the situation first arose in the public eye and despite negative media attention. Safety is still the number one concern for all students at MU. Campus has been calm; the recent protests were calm without destruction of property or anyone who was physically harmed. MU has measures to ensure that safety continues for all of its students, such as blue- light emergency phones located throughout campus, locked residence halls only accessible to students with proper ID cards, and it's one of the few campuses in the United States with its own dedicated police department. MU also has emergency alert systems in place, including e-mail, text, phone, and social media alerts that students, faculty, and staff can sign up for at mualert.missouri.edu. Fortunately, MU is in good hands as it makes changes and works toward a brighter future. Protests have quieted down, and although some top administrators have stepped down, MU created a new vice chancellor position for inclusion, diversity, and equity, which is currently and temporarily occupied by Chuck Henson, associate dean in the School of Law. There is also a new Office for Civil Rights and Title IX to combat discrimination. Diversity training is now mandatory for all faculty, staff, and students, and a Diversity 101 course will be required of all incoming freshmen. While it will take time for MU to fully get back on its proverbial feet, the university as a whole is confident it will remain a great place for higher education.
